Thedaughter of Joseph D. Raidy, one ofLebanon’s most successful printers, she may have printer’s ink runningthrough her veins, but she was notprepared to admit it. Petite, dynamic, and radiating confidence, after graduatingfrom AUB with a major in graphicdesign and a minor in business (’05),Raidy decided to give the family businessa wide berth because, she says,“I was worried it would interfere inmy private life, my personal freedom, especially in Lebanon.”Instead she went into advertising, followed by animation and websitedesign.“Eventually there was an openinghere and my mother [vice-chairmanat Raidy] told me, you fit the profile, but if you are not going to take it, wewill give it to someone else and later, there may not be a vacancy,” sheexplains. “I decided to take it, get it offmy conscience, and move on. But Idiscovered that I loved printing. I lovedpaper, and I loved ink, the whole process, everything about it. Business isbusiness, family is family, and it hasn’tinterfered in my private life more than itwould have elsewhere. I guess whenyou prove yourself, and I was worriedabout that, it turns out all right.”Now Raidy holds the title, creative director and quality controlmanager, of Raidy Printing Group,“the biggest printing company inthe region.” Along with her brotherDoumit, who runs the Emirates sideof the business, she reports to theirfather, who started working at the ageof 11 and built up his printing empirefrom scratch. “My father is the boss,”she says. “I call him Raidy. I alwayshave since I was a kid; he is my dadand I love him but for me he is Raidy!”Clearly she respects the self-mademan whose energy and dedication towork she has so patently inherited. In Marie-Joe Raidy’s philosophythe term family business extendsbeyond the triumvirate of the fatherand two siblings: “I strongly believe youdon’t have to be blood to be family;any employee who is really dedicated, who travels under the bombs just toget to the office on time every day, issomeone I consider as family. Mostof our employees are like family. Webelieve in empowerment of personnelto provide the best service in the bestworking conditions. Every departmenthere is a link in a chain. If one link fails, the whole chain breaks; that is why weinvest so much in our people.”Raidy’s Beirut headquarters ishoused in a brand new, state-of-the-artbuilding that provides a “one-stop printshop” servicing clients throughout theMiddle East, the Gulf region, Europe, and Africa. Construction began justprior to the outbreak of the 2006 war, which caused the Raidys pause forthought. The board voted to stop thework, but not Raidy. “My father waited44 MainGate Fall 2011 | www.aub.edu.lb/maingate

Raidy isproud that the firm’s decision to adopteco-friendly techniques in 2004 hasinspired others to follow suit. A win-wininitiative, she says it is good for theenvironment and good for business, the proof being that in Raidy’s case ithas attracted many like-minded clients.Raidy clearly falls into the categoryof the doer, not just the talker. As ateenage founding member of the Beirutcharity, Child of Lebanon, she maintainsher commitment to the charity as itshead of communications fighting for afair deal for children. As a member ofthe Better Business Group, foundedin 2009 by the American LebaneseChamber of Commerce, Raidy works toencourage the implementation of a codeof ethics within the corporate workspace. She is also an active member ofthe campaigning organization LebaneseLeague for Women in Business (LLWB),a hub for businesswomen to networkand exchange ideas. LLWB fightsfor women’s rights at work and forchanges in the tax and labor laws.Last year she was one offour women selected torepresent Lebanon for theprogram Policy Advocatesfor Women’s Issues in theMENA region, a one-yearadvocacy campaign forchange. The role of womenin the work place is clearlysomething close to Raidy’sheart. She is a regularattendee at high profileglobal initiatives for womenand has twice been nominatedfor the GoldmanSachs and Fortune GlobalWomen Leaders Award, one of only 20 womennominated annually out of10,000 eligible candidates. As an AUB alumna, this creative bundle of energy salutesher alma mater for the soft and hardskills it gave her. “They really teachyou to be professional and humble;humbleness is important. When yougraduate you feel like you are themaster of the world and only with timeand experience do you realize that youdon’t know everything. AUB studentsare usually humble; they work harder, and are well trained. Some of theteachers that students complain aboutfor being too tough or critical turn outto have been the most helpful. I recognizedthat earlier because I had workedin Raidy during summers and I knewwhat it meant when the teachers gaveus a hard time. You don’t learn fromsomeone who is always nice to you.Anyone can applaud, but not everyonecan teach you something valuable.”“When I was an AUB graphicdesign student I challenged myselfto do what I hated most, businessadministration. That challenge turnedinto a passion because, as I noticedlater, merging creativity and businessis something really beautiful and ratherrare. Graphic designers who startworking usually say, ‘I wish I had donesome business,’ and business peoplewith a passion for art say, ‘I wish I haddone some art courses,’ but they sayit when it is too late, so I am glad I didit when it was not too late.”Raidy seems to be ahead of thegame in most things. Just before ourinterview started she had been sayinghello to a visitor. It was the man whohad produced her first CD when shewas just 12. “I thought I wanted to bea singer,” she says with a broad grin.“It is good I got it out of mysystem then!”Learn more:www.mariejoeraidy.com/index.html–M.A.www.aub.edu.lb/maingate | MainGate Fall 2011 45
