Beyond Bliss Streetc l a s s n o t e sRECENTLYHONOREDZaven Messerlian (BA ’59,MA ’64) was recently awarded<strong>the</strong> Golden Medal <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>M<strong>in</strong>istry <strong>of</strong> Education andSciences for <strong>the</strong> Republic<strong>of</strong> Armenia. The medal waspresented by <strong>the</strong> ArmenianAmbassador Ashod Kocharianat <strong>the</strong> 84 th commencementexercises <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ArmenianEvangelical College <strong>of</strong> <strong>Beirut</strong>.Messerlian is an educator, historian,and prolific author. Hehas been <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>cipal <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>Armenian Evangelical Collegefor <strong>the</strong> last 44 years.Nabil T. Nassar (BS ’61,MD ’65), pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> medic<strong>in</strong>e<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong>Internal Medic<strong>in</strong>e, Division<strong>of</strong> Infectious Diseases anddirector <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ExecutiveHealth and Travel Medic<strong>in</strong>eProgram at AUB, wasrecently honored at <strong>the</strong>2011 annual graduation celebration<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department<strong>of</strong> Internal Medic<strong>in</strong>e for hislong service to <strong>the</strong> department.While do<strong>in</strong>g his residencyat AUB, Nassar wasselected for <strong>the</strong> competitiveAUB/Hopk<strong>in</strong>s exchange programfor fellowship tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>gat Johns Hopk<strong>in</strong>s <strong>University</strong>where he earned an MPH.He returned to AUB <strong>in</strong> 1970to teach <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Department <strong>of</strong>Internal Medic<strong>in</strong>e and to head<strong>University</strong> Health Services,better known as “<strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>firmary,”which he restructured.In 2004, he established <strong>the</strong>Executive Health and TravelCenter and has served as itsdirector ever s<strong>in</strong>ce.Khalil N. Bitar (BS ’68,PhD ’76), <strong>American</strong>Gastroenterology AssociationFellow, is a research pr<strong>of</strong>essorand <strong>the</strong> director <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>GI Molecular Motors Lab at<strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> MichiganMedical School. His laboratoryhas pioneered research<strong>in</strong> neuro-gastroenterologyand motility. Bitar was honoredat <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>augural d<strong>in</strong>nerfor <strong>the</strong> League <strong>of</strong> ResearchExcellence <strong>in</strong> April 2011 by<strong>the</strong> dean <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong>Michigan Medical School.Bitar’s research, which hasbeen supported by <strong>the</strong>National Institutes <strong>of</strong> Healthfor more than 30 years, focuseson novel approaches us<strong>in</strong>gbiomedical eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g andregenerative medic<strong>in</strong>e to treatneuromuscular diseases <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> gastro<strong>in</strong>test<strong>in</strong>al tract.Marwan Refaat (BS ’99,MD ’03) received <strong>the</strong>Heart Rhythm SocietyKenneth Rosen Award <strong>in</strong> cardiacpac<strong>in</strong>g and electrophysiologyand <strong>the</strong> MassachusettsInstitute <strong>of</strong> Technology ArabStudents’ OrganizationScience and TechnologyYoung Pr<strong>of</strong>essionalAchievement Award <strong>in</strong> 2011.At AUB, Refaat earned hismedical degree with dist<strong>in</strong>ctionand was a PenroseScholar <strong>in</strong> 2003. He latercompleted an <strong>in</strong>ternal medic<strong>in</strong>eresidency atMassachusetts GeneralHospital, Harvard MedicalSchool, and was a recipient<strong>of</strong> its Department <strong>of</strong> Medic<strong>in</strong>eAward <strong>in</strong> 2007. He completeda fellowship <strong>in</strong> cardiovascularmedic<strong>in</strong>e at <strong>the</strong><strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> PittsburghMedical Center and received<strong>the</strong> Pittsburgh YoungInvestigator Award and <strong>the</strong>Dr. Ziady Memorial Award foroutstand<strong>in</strong>g achievement <strong>in</strong><strong>the</strong> care <strong>of</strong> cardiac patients <strong>in</strong>2010. Refaat is a cardiologistspecializ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> cardiac electrophysiologyat <strong>the</strong> <strong>University</strong><strong>of</strong> California San FranciscoMedical Center. He’s also ascientist at <strong>the</strong> GladstoneInstitute <strong>of</strong> CardiovascularDisease.
