In health and safety, action fronts operated with the purpose of expanding awareness of risks and
safe attitudes for employees and service suppliers to carry out their tasks. They comprise the
Unified Project for Occupational Safety and Health and Quality of Living as well as educational,
enablement, monitoring, wearing unified safety equipment, among other measures.
INSTITUTO EDP
The EDP Institute has a platform for relationship with all parties interested in the social and
environmental dimension, and should increase the efficacy of EDP Brazil's work in this area.
Social and cultural programs supported and stimulated by EDP in Brazil have received investments
of R$ 8.5 million, with a focus on initiatives in the areas of education, social work, and local
development. These actions are carried out based on the vision that the Company's influence on
the communities where it operates depends on its contribution for the individuals' educational and
cultural progress, and consequently their economic progress.
Projects to be funded by the Company go through a public selection, which is made based on a
published announcement. One of the evaluation criteria is the possibility of integrating the project
to the Company's business, which is electricity. In 2009, Company-supported social organizations
carried out several actions on that theme, such as lectures, community meetings, leaflets and
events in order to publicize the correct and safe use of electric power.
The following projects merit special emphasis as the most important:
• “Letras de Luz”: in partnership with Victor Civita Foundation, organized theater plays in schools,
and trained teachers to work in reading workshops. This program was the EDP's biggest
incentive to reading in Brazil, with the training of 1,150 multipliers; 33,338 spectators in theatrical
presentations and donation of 202-item libraries to 40 municipalities, totaling 15,480 books;
• “Dentista do Bem“ (Do Good Dentist): offers free dental treatment to low-income children and
adolescents in public schools, through the voluntary work of dental surgeons. EDP Bandeirante,
through the EDP Institute, also sponsored the "Mouth to Mouth" documentary, concerning the
problems of dental health in Brazil.
• “EDP nas Escolas“ (EDP at Schools): benefited 19,760 first to fifth year students in 72
municipal public schools in the states of São Paulo, Espírito Santo, Santa Catarina, Mato Grosso
do Sul and Tocantins, by distributing school kits, and conducted a campaign on dental hygiene
and healthy nutrition. It also made physical improvements in the school facilities.
• ”Programa EDP Solidária” (Solidary EDP Program): supported social projects focusing on
health, education and local development and provided direct services to approximately 17,902
people.
• “EDP in Sports”: provided incentives to karate practicing projects for 100 Down Syndrome
children, and also sponsored the International Judo Challenge, an event carried out by the
Brazilian Judo Confederation in October 2009.
• "EDP Culture Program": carried out projects aiming the dissemination of arts and social
inclusion by arts, in initiatives that have directly affected over 120,000 people.
• The contest "Art with Energy, People Energy and Transforming Energy": distributed awards
to 15 public-school students' drawings, aiming to stimulate the development of creativity and
citizenship, as part of the Company's objective of stimulating the publicizing of the energy theme
through art.
