In 2009, 18 energy efficiency projects were completed in public hospitals and charity organizations
in the states of São Paulo and Espírito Santo, providing savings of approximately
1,545 MWh/year in cooling and lighting systems. Among traffic light system modernization
projects, we highlight the one implemented in the city of Taubaté, state of São Paulo, with the
donation of LED lamps which resulted in energy consumption savings of about 90%.
In the state of Espírito Santo, the Efficient Community program covered 61 Greater Vitória districts
and comprised educational actions for the efficient and safe use of energy, installation of 104,598
compact fluorescent lamps, replacement of 103 inefficient refrigerators, donation of 5,904
residential metering boxes and 3,707 kits of electric materials for internal installations. The overall
energy savings amounted to 11,176 MWh/year.
A project developed in partnership with Housing and Urban Development Company (in
Portuguese, CDHU) replaced 1,680 electric showers by solar water heating systems, and installed
9,000 efficient and economical lighting points at a housing complex in the city of Mogi das Cruzes,
state of São Paulo. The result was energy savings of 9,195 MWh/year in lighting systems.
Environmental Responsibility
In 2009, environmental investments and expenses amounted to R$ 29 million and focused on the
implementation of the Environmental Management System, the obtaining of permits for ventures
and the installation of compact and isolated networks . These networks improve the system's
performance, and make our relationship with the vegetation of urban areas more harmonious, with
a smaller impact on the environment.
The initiative made it possible for the Company's Small Thermoelectric Power Plants (PCHs) to be
certified by the ISO14000 Standards in Mato Grosso do Sul and Espírito Santo States. The
certification of the Peixe Angical Hydroelectric Power Plant (UHE) in Tocantins State by the ISO
14000:2004 and OHSAS 18000:2007 Standards was also confirmed. In 2010, proceeding with the
environmental certification plan of the EDP companies in Brazil, we expect to perform audits on
distribution assets for compliance with the aforementioned standards.
In the prevention of environmental liabilities, the companies continuously monitor soils and
underground water at all facilities and holds periodic noise measurement campaigns at
substations.
In 2009, EDP Brazil joined over 500 companies from all over the world to underwrite a global
agreement on climate changes disclosed at a meeting on Climate Change held at the
headquarters of the United Nations in New York (The Copenhagen Communiqué on Climate
Change). This agreement requested ambitious and strong world consensus on climate changes to
be completed at the 15th Conference of the Parties (COP 15) at the United Nations Convention on
Climate Changes in Copenhagen, Denmark.
The following projects merit special emphasis as the most important:
• Programa Econnosco: provided for significant savings in electric energy consumption at the
buildings of EDP's companies in Brazil. Fifty sustainability ambassadors, volunteer professionals
trained by the EDP Institute in partnership with the Akatu Institute for conscientious consumption,
are responsible for making the program known. The program also encourages recycling and the
use of the ecological footprint concept, which calculates the impact of individuals, organizations
and populations on the environment.
• Clean Development Mechanism (MDL) of the Kyoto Protocol: it currently relies on five
registered programs and two programs under validation. Aware of the importance and amplitude
