He began his term of office at the conclusion ofthe annual conference.The 2008–09 board of directors convened its first meetingon July 23, 2008, at the end of the annual conference. Hereis a summary of their decisions <strong>and</strong> actions:• President Sal Rinella welcomed new board <strong>member</strong>s:• John Ruffo, president-elect <strong>and</strong> partner, WRNSStudio, LLP, San Francisco, CA;• Donna Kidd, secretary/treasurer <strong>and</strong> associatevice president of budget <strong>and</strong> planning, GeorgeMason <strong>University</strong>, Fairfax, VA;• Katharine Mace Learned, North Atlanticregional representative <strong>and</strong> director of facilities,Northfield Mount Hermon School in MountHermon, MA;• Lily del C. Berrios, Southern regionalrepresentative <strong>and</strong> principal, Sizemore Group,Atlanta, GA;• Linda Baer, at-large director <strong>and</strong> senior vicechancellor, academic <strong>and</strong> student affairs,Minnesota State <strong>College</strong>s <strong>and</strong> Universities, SaintPaul, MN;• Leslie Louden, <strong>member</strong>ship committee chair <strong>and</strong>associate, Bowie Gridley Architects, Washington,DC; <strong>and</strong>• Patricia Caldwell, professional developmentcommittee chair <strong>and</strong> consultant from Victorville,CA.• Reports were given on committee meetings <strong>and</strong> otheractivities at the conference.• President Sal Rinella declared a “year of discovery”<strong>and</strong> appointed task <strong>for</strong>ces to explore key questionsrelated to priorities from the <strong>SCUP</strong> Strategic Plan.Each task <strong>for</strong>ce is chaired by a board <strong>member</strong>:• <strong>SCUP</strong> Academies—chaired by president-elect,John Ruffo.• Trans<strong>for</strong>mational Leadership—chaired by PatriciaCaldwell, <strong>SCUP</strong> Professional DevelopmentCommittee (PDC) chair.• Sustainability—chaired by immediate pastpresident, Nancy Tierney.• Membership Breadth <strong>and</strong> Scope—chaired by<strong>member</strong>ship committee chair, Leslie Louden.• Strategic Partnerships <strong>and</strong> Alliances—chaired byLinda Baer.• Supporting Emerging Leaders of <strong>Planning</strong>—chaired by Pacific regional representative, NirajDangoria.• The board approved a reimbursement policy <strong>for</strong>PDC <strong>member</strong>s charged with convening a Saturdaypreconference workshop at the annual conference tocover lodging <strong>for</strong> one night.• The board discussed a faculty rotation policy <strong>for</strong>the <strong>SCUP</strong> <strong>Planning</strong> Institute <strong>and</strong> <strong>SCUP</strong> FoundationWorkshops, but agreed to visit the issue again duringtheir monthly call in August.• The board will meet again October 16-17, 2008, inAnn Arbor, MI.<strong>SCUP</strong> Member News 8 August 2008
