Incoming president, SalRinella, congratulated Tierney on an excellent year ofwork. He began his term of office at the conclusion ofthe annual conference.The 2008–09 board of directors convened its first meetingon July 23, 2008, at the end of the annual conference. Hereis a summary of their decisions and actions:• President Sal Rinella welcomed new board members:• John Ruffo, president-elect and partner, WRNSStudio, LLP, San Francisco, CA;• Donna Kidd, secretary/treasurer and associatevice president of budget and planning, GeorgeMason University, Fairfax, VA;• Katharine Mace Learned, North Atlanticregional representative and director of facilities,Northfield Mount Hermon School in MountHermon, MA;• Lily del C. Berrios, Southern regionalrepresentative and principal, Sizemore Group,Atlanta, GA;• Linda Baer, at-large director and senior vicechancellor, academic and student affairs,Minnesota State Colleges and Universities, SaintPaul, MN;• Leslie Louden, membership committee chair andassociate, Bowie Gridley Architects, Washington,DC; and• Patricia Caldwell, professional developmentcommittee chair and consultant from Victorville,CA.• Reports were given on committee meetings and otheractivities at the conference.• President Sal Rinella declared a “year of discovery”and appointed task forces to explore key questionsrelated to priorities from the SCUP Strategic Plan.Each task force is chaired by a board member:• SCUP Academies—chaired by president-elect,John Ruffo.• Transformational Leadership—chaired by PatriciaCaldwell, SCUP Professional DevelopmentCommittee (PDC) chair.• Sustainability—chaired by immediate pastpresident, Nancy Tierney.• Membership Breadth and Scope—chaired bymembership committee chair, Leslie Louden.• Strategic Partnerships and Alliances—chaired byLinda Baer.• Supporting Emerging Leaders of Planning—chaired by Pacific regional representative, NirajDangoria.• The board approved a reimbursement policy forPDC members charged with convening a Saturdaypreconference workshop at the annual conference tocover lodging for one night.• The board discussed a faculty rotation policy forthe SCUP Planning Institute and SCUP FoundationWorkshops, but agreed to visit the issue again duringtheir monthly call in August.• The board will meet again October 16-17, 2008, inAnn Arbor, MI.SCUP Member News 8 August 2008
