DISCIPLINE HEARINGS, April 2, 2007THE SCHOOL BOARD OF SEMINOLE COUNTYThe School Board <strong>of</strong> <strong>Seminole</strong> <strong>County</strong> convened on Monday, April 2, 2007, for <strong>the</strong> purpose <strong>of</strong>conducting discipline hearings. Board member, Mrs. Sandra Robinson was present to hear <strong>the</strong>recommendations. Background/Analysis:Student Council President Whitney Hintze and School Board Chairman Barry Gainer performed <strong>the</strong>welcome and introductions.Executive Director <strong>of</strong> Secondary Education/High <strong>Schools</strong> Walt Griffin requested student inputregarding <strong>the</strong> effective use <strong>of</strong> instructional technology in high <strong>school</strong>. Discussion took place regarding<strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> pod casts for lectures, video conferencing and online instruction. Students sharedinformation regarding classes and course format that <strong>the</strong>y think would work well as online coursesbased on <strong>the</strong>ir experience taking online courses through Florida Virtual School. DeputySuperintendent George Kosmac asked students which technology currently available in <strong>the</strong>irclassrooms <strong>the</strong>y felt was useful. Superintendent Vogel had students cite examples <strong>of</strong> effectivetechnology use in high <strong>school</strong>s. Students cited excellent instructional examples using mobile laptoplabs, smart<strong>board</strong>s and LCD projectors.An open forum was held. The following issues were raised:• Hand soap is not available in most high <strong>school</strong> restrooms. Students would like antibacterial handgel in each classroom for <strong>the</strong>ir use.• Potential legislative initiative to delete funding for gifted courses. School Board representativesexplained <strong>the</strong> issue and encouraged students to write <strong>the</strong>ir legislators.• Students commended <strong>the</strong> district for its energy savings initiatives and would like to see additionalsteps taken to preserve our natural resources.• Students asked for <strong>the</strong> implementation <strong>of</strong> recycling programs for paper, aluminum and plastic.• Discussion took place regarding cheating. Students suggested that teachers enforce cell phonerules to prevent students from taking pictures <strong>of</strong> exams. Background/Analysis:January 6, 1997, <strong>Seminole</strong> <strong>County</strong> Public <strong>Schools</strong> was awarded a grant for $65,000.00 from <strong>the</strong>Department <strong>of</strong> Education to develop a Comprehensive Statewide Medical documentation tracking andbilling system. The new system would <strong>of</strong>fer Florida <strong>school</strong> districts <strong>the</strong> ability to bill for Medicaidservices without <strong>the</strong> necessity for a consulting firm. The Medicaid Administrative Claiming System(MACS) was piloted from October 2001 to December 2001 with fifteen Florida <strong>school</strong> districts.The Department <strong>of</strong> Education, in March <strong>of</strong> 2002, requested application from districts willing to be <strong>the</strong>billing agent for MACS. On May 21, 2002, <strong>the</strong> SCPS School Board agreed to have <strong>Seminole</strong> <strong>County</strong>Public <strong>Schools</strong> become <strong>the</strong> data manager for 15 <strong>school</strong> districts. <strong>Seminole</strong> <strong>County</strong> Public <strong>Schools</strong>would receive approximately $20,000.00 to process <strong>the</strong> data forms.On May 13, 2003, <strong>Seminole</strong> <strong>County</strong> School Board approved <strong>the</strong> change in fees for <strong>the</strong> Consortium from$1.00 to $3.00 per form and on April 25, 2006, <strong>Seminole</strong> <strong>County</strong> School Board approved <strong>the</strong> change infee for <strong>the</strong> Consortium from $3.00 to $6.00 per form. All 45 districts within <strong>the</strong> MACS Consortiumsigned <strong>the</strong> fee increase agreement.A review <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> cost incurred from <strong>the</strong> past year indicate that <strong>Seminole</strong> <strong>County</strong> Public <strong>Schools</strong> shouldbe charging $9.00 per form to operate this service for <strong>the</strong> 2007-08 <strong>school</strong> year. SECTION J: STUDENTSSTUDENT ATTENDANCE FILE: JETITLE: Student Attendance (Middle School)RationaleRegular attendance provides students <strong>the</strong> opportunity to participate in many integrallearning activities, such as class discussions, group experiences, field trips, guestspeakers, and direct instruction, which cannot be simulated or replicated with writtenwork. Therefore, with <strong>the</strong> goal <strong>of</strong> promoting student achievement and increasing <strong>the</strong>likelihood <strong>of</strong> success, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Seminole</strong> <strong>County</strong> Public <strong>Schools</strong> has adopted a uniformMiddle School Attendance Policy that consists <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> following components:I. Compulsory AttendanceA student enrolled in <strong>Seminole</strong> <strong>County</strong> Public <strong>Schools</strong> who is under <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> 16 isrequired to attend <strong>school</strong> regularly during <strong>the</strong> entire <strong>school</strong> year. Unsuccessfulattempts to make this contact should be documented and a copy sent to <strong>the</strong> principal ordesignee. Unless <strong>the</strong>re is clear evidence that <strong>the</strong> absences are not a pattern <strong>of</strong>nonattendance, <strong>the</strong> case shall be referred to <strong>the</strong> <strong>school</strong>’s social worker.Upon each subsequent unexcused absence, <strong>the</strong> parent/guardian shall be notified <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>student’s nonattendance. The parent/guardian will also be informed <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> truancyprocedures that will be followed if <strong>the</strong> student persists in being unexcused from <strong>school</strong>.VII. Excused Absences DefinedThe principal or designee shall determine if a student’s absence from <strong>school</strong> is excusedor unexcused pursuant to <strong>the</strong> definition set forth in this policy. An absence will berecorded as excused for each day a student is not in attendance for any <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> followingreasons:1. medical treatment provided by a licensed physician2. sickness or injury makes attendance inadvisable*3. Observance <strong>of</strong> a religious holiday when <strong>the</strong> parent has requested andobtained permission for <strong>the</strong> student’s absence.4. law enforcement order or court subpoena5. death <strong>of</strong> a friend or family member6. natural disaster7. traffic accident that directly involved <strong>the</strong> student8. extraordinary circumstances or situations approved by <strong>the</strong> principal*Short term, non-chronic illnesses may be documented/explained via a signed parentnote. A student may be excused for a continued or repeated illness up to 10 attendancedays in a span <strong>of</strong> 90-calendar days. After this period <strong>of</strong> time, a doctor’s verification willbe required. If no verification is submitted within 3 student attendance days, a referral to<strong>the</strong> <strong>school</strong> <strong>board</strong> nurse is required. Should <strong>the</strong> principal or designee reasonably suspectan abuse <strong>of</strong> this provision, documentation from a “licensed practicing physician” (M.D.,O.D., D.D., D.D.S., and/or D.C., etc.) may be required as a condition for declaring <strong>the</strong>student’s absence for illness excused.VIII. Unexcused Absences DefinedAbsence from class for any reason o<strong>the</strong>r than those identified in Section VII shall beunexcused. In addition, <strong>the</strong> following conditions shall result in an absence beingrecorded as unexcused:1. No Documentation <strong>of</strong> Reason for AbsenceStudent absences that are not verified according to <strong>the</strong> procedures established at <strong>the</strong><strong>school</strong> for documenting <strong>the</strong> reasons for a student’s absence (Section V).2. Vacations/Personal Family TimeAll absences from <strong>school</strong> due to vacation or personal family time are unexcused.Parents must submit to <strong>the</strong> principal, in writing, requests for pre-arranged absencesdue to vacation or personal family time if <strong>the</strong>y wish to obtain, in advance, <strong>the</strong> classwork that will be missed during <strong>the</strong> nonattendance. Teachers may, but are notrequired to, provide class assignments to students in advance. Make-Up Assignments and AssessmentsRegardless <strong>of</strong> whe<strong>the</strong>r an absence is excused or unexcused, students are required tomake-up all coursework and assessments missed during <strong>the</strong> period <strong>of</strong> nonattendance.Immediately upon returning to class, it is <strong>the</strong> responsibility <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> student to obtainmissed coursework, confirm corresponding dates for completion, and schedule missedassessments. Daily class participation points shall be deducted for each unexcusedabsence.Students shall earn full credit for all short-term assignments, long-term assignments,tests, and quizzes made-up within <strong>the</strong> reasonable time limits established by <strong>the</strong> teacher.Partial credit shall be given for assignments not completed within <strong>the</strong> time limitsestablished by <strong>the</strong> teacher.1. Excusedabsences, pursuant to <strong>the</strong> definition set forth in this policy, shall not be counted against<strong>the</strong> minimum.Any student who has been enrolled but not in attendance for instruction for a minimum <strong>of</strong>ninety percent <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> class meetings may not be awarded credit unless <strong>the</strong> student hasdemonstrated mastery <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> student performance standards in <strong>the</strong> course <strong>of</strong> study bydoing all <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> following:1. All make-up work must be satisfactorily completed.2. If required, make-up time or attendance contracts must be successfullycompleted.3. THE SCHOOL BOARD OF SEMINOLE COUNTYINFORMATION ITEM: ESSS DEPARTMENT HIGHLIGHTS X.F.Item NumberIndependent Living Initiative Assisting <strong>the</strong> Disabled (ILIAD)Tile at ILIAD - When Nathan Walker <strong>of</strong> Boy Scout Troop #601 in Apopka heard about <strong>Seminole</strong> <strong>County</strong>Public <strong>Schools</strong> ILIAD program, he wanted to do something that could benefit <strong>the</strong> students that attendILIAD. It was <strong>the</strong>n that he approached Transition Resource Teacher, Shari Gray to discuss an idea thatwould benefit <strong>the</strong> ILIAD, as well as help him earn his Eagle Rank. On February 19, 2006, Nathan alongwith o<strong>the</strong>r Boy Scouts, scout leaders, and parents installed ceramic tile in <strong>the</strong> kitchen area <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ILIAD.Nathan was responsible for obtaining donations for <strong>the</strong> materials for his project, arranging for individualsto assist in project, and making sure <strong>the</strong> project was completed in <strong>the</strong> time frame that it was promised.Nathan was <strong>the</strong> Floridian <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Week for Channel 13, and this project was also mentioned in <strong>the</strong> OrlandoSentinel Sunday <strong>Seminole</strong> Section.Wheelchair Ramp at ILIAD – While helping ano<strong>the</strong>r Boy Scout complete his leadership for his Eaglebadge at <strong>the</strong> ILIAD, a scout with Troop #601 asked why <strong>the</strong> front entrance did not have a wheelchairramp. This conversation gave him an idea for a project for his Eagle badge. After approaching ShariGray, Transition Resource Teacher for ILIAD, and doing research, he and his fellow scouts will beinstalling a wheelchair ramp at <strong>the</strong> front door <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> lab. By having this ramp, <strong>the</strong> students who use wheelchairs will be able to enter <strong>the</strong> beautiful front entrance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ILIAD. Installation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ramp will be onApril 28, 2006. During this time, he will instruct and lead his fellow troop members through <strong>the</strong> process <strong>of</strong>measuring, constructing a frame, and pouring <strong>the</strong> needed concrete for <strong>the</strong> ramp.Hopper CenterFCAT Success: Hopper students were more focused than ever before during FCAT testing. Why is thatnews worthy? Because, Hopper, being a SED Center for exceptional students means a lot when ourchildren remained focused and intense in taking <strong>the</strong> test. They used <strong>the</strong> strategies appropriately whentrying to determine <strong>the</strong> best answer for a question and did not become angry or frustrated. Truly, <strong>the</strong>ywanted to produce <strong>the</strong>ir best work. Is <strong>the</strong>re anything more? No, practical application <strong>of</strong> learned skills isan accomplishment in itself.Award: Hopper students participated in <strong>the</strong> “Victory in Violence” banner competition and won secondplace for middle <strong>school</strong>s in <strong>Seminole</strong> <strong>County</strong> for 2007. We are excited when our students engage inactivities outside <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Hopper Walls and feel good about <strong>the</strong>ir accomplishments. They received abeautiful plaque and a $40 check. That was <strong>the</strong> Bear Lake’s motto on March 30 th . The annual Trek for Techwas held in an effort to supplement <strong>the</strong> <strong>school</strong>’s technology funds. Students from each grade level receivedpledges or single monetary donations for walking around <strong>the</strong> track. This event raised over $2,500 for BearLake’s technology needs.On April 5 th , <strong>the</strong> Bear Lake Sound performed at <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> Central Florida. The ensemble group iscomprised <strong>of</strong> approximately 100 fourth and fifth graders, directed by Dr. Artie Almeida. The group performed afoot stomping show with fifteen songs for parents and <strong>the</strong> university’s music department. There were vocal andrecorder performances accompanied by a variety <strong>of</strong> percussion instruments. Selections played reinforce <strong>the</strong>musical skills <strong>of</strong> note and rest values, melody direction, rondo form, and many o<strong>the</strong>rs.Casselberry ElementaryCasselberry Elementary chose an unusual way to participate in Relay for Life, an annual fundraiser for <strong>the</strong>American Cancer Society. Students and staff made paper chains to decorate <strong>the</strong> campsite at Lake Brantley.Casselberry’s creative campsite came in third. The most exciting part was that over $2,200 was raised throughdonations and fundraising events for <strong>the</strong> American Cancer Society during <strong>the</strong> last couple <strong>of</strong> months before <strong>the</strong>relay. In addition to taking part in <strong>the</strong> overnight event at Lake Brantley High <strong>school</strong> on March 30 th , studentscreated a Garden <strong>of</strong> Hope to honor loved ones who have dealt with cancer. The tribute, which was displayed inCasselberry’s cafeteria, featured bright yellow daffodils decorated with names <strong>of</strong> family members and friendsaffected by cancer. Casselberry hopes to make a difference in <strong>the</strong> fight against cancer, as it has touched somany.Eastbrook ElementaryEastbrook’s Locks <strong>of</strong> Love night was a huge success! On April 5 th , twenty-two students and parents came todonate <strong>the</strong>ir hair. The entire student body at Eastbrook read Because <strong>of</strong> Anya and became familiar withalopecia areata (permanent hair loss). Geneva Elementary SchoolThe smell <strong>of</strong> baking bread filled <strong>the</strong> Geneva Multipurpose Room recently, when Kindergarten students put on aproduction <strong>of</strong> The Little Red Hen. This humorous musical brought out a huge crowd! Parent volunteers createdcostumes using ball caps in different colors, decorated to resemble <strong>the</strong> animals in <strong>the</strong> play. A fun time was hadby all!Kindergarten registration was very busy! We have corralled some eager new mustangs for next <strong>school</strong> year.These new students, along with <strong>the</strong>ir parents, have been invited to breakfast and a tour <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> campus in May.Second graders showcased <strong>the</strong>ir wonderful writing abilities by hosting an Author’s Tea. On April 12 th , students and staff were excited about <strong>the</strong> <strong>school</strong>’s first DEAR (DropEverything and Read) Day. The entire <strong>school</strong> read silently from 9:30 – 10:00 AM. Following <strong>the</strong> silent readingperiod, special guest readers from <strong>the</strong> Educational Support Center, staff, community, and business partnersread aloud to classrooms from kindergarten to fifth grade. Teachers in special areas <strong>of</strong> music, art, physicaleducation, and character education also read to students.To celebrate reading, students who read three Sunshine State Books and passed <strong>the</strong> AR tests were invited tovote for <strong>the</strong>ir favorite book. The winning book was Cryptid Hunters by Roland Smith. 110 students participated inthis event! The students' votes were submitted to be included in <strong>the</strong> statewide vote.The Goldsboro PTA and Character Education teacher have designed a program called, “Show Your GoodCharacter”. It is designed to introduce children to valuable life skills and encourage good behavior at <strong>school</strong>.This program is different because it focuses on <strong>the</strong> child’s total environment both at <strong>school</strong> and home and itrewards <strong>the</strong> child and <strong>the</strong> parents. Students selected by staff members receive a bright yellow “GoodCharacter” slip that goes into a drawing at <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> each month. Names are pulled from each grade level on amonthly basis. At <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> each grading period, one major winner is drawn. Students recommended threetimes receive a certificate for <strong>the</strong>mselves and <strong>the</strong>ir parents. Wal-Mart joined Goldsboro Elementary businesspartners by contributing $300 to this program.“The First Tee Life Skills Program” links valuable life skills lessons to <strong>the</strong> game <strong>of</strong> golf. Through <strong>the</strong> game,students develop and learn how to demonstrate discipline, self-control, courtesy, and respect toward o<strong>the</strong>rswhile under pressure. This program teaches students that life skills truly benefit <strong>the</strong>m as well as those around<strong>the</strong>m in everyday life.Lake Mary ElementaryDuring April, Lake Mary Elementary recognized three fabulous volunteers for <strong>the</strong>ir hard work and commitmentto making a difference in <strong>the</strong> lives <strong>of</strong> students. Mrs. Lauri Hagerman was selected as <strong>the</strong> <strong>school</strong>’s Dividend <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> Year. She always brings a smile and a laugh with her while she directs PTA fundraisers. Mr. William Higgswas chosen as <strong>the</strong> Senior Dividend <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Year. He is a faithful worker in <strong>the</strong> media center, making sure booksare available and easy to find. Miss Jessica Rutter was recognized as <strong>the</strong> Youth Dividend <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Year. Shedevotes much <strong>of</strong> her time assisting autistic students. These three represent an army <strong>of</strong> Dividends who havedonated more than 6,000 hours <strong>of</strong> service to Lake Mary Elementary.A Published Book Celebration was held in <strong>the</strong> Media Center on April 11 th . Strange and Weird Animal Facts is abook that was authored and illustrated by reading buddies in Mrs. Dickison’s second grade and Mrs. Stormer’sPage 76


third grade. Students worked in pairs to chose and research an animal. They were also responsible forillustrating a page in <strong>the</strong> book. During <strong>the</strong> celebration, reading buddies read what <strong>the</strong>y wrote while <strong>the</strong>irillustration was displayed on a large screen. Parents were invited to share in <strong>the</strong> excitement as <strong>the</strong> studentsreceived a copy <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> finished book.Kindergarten, first, and second grade students took part in <strong>the</strong> statewide Florida Reading Association (FRA)Children’s Book Award Program. Throughout <strong>the</strong> year, students read eight picture books featured in this year’sFRA program. After enjoying <strong>the</strong> books and discussing which books <strong>the</strong>y liked <strong>the</strong> most, each student voted for<strong>the</strong>ir favorite. Student votes determined Lake Mary Elementary’s favorite FRA book and will help determineFlorida’s favorite FRA book. The <strong>school</strong> had 234 students participate in this program. The winning book wasThree Silly Billies, a funny retelling <strong>of</strong> The Three Billy Goats Gruff. The students' votes were submitted to beincluded in <strong>the</strong> statewide FRA vote.PTA organizers were proud to report final numbers for Lake Mary Elementary's Spring Festival held on March30 th . Over 1,000 teachers, students, and families attended <strong>the</strong> festival. Toge<strong>the</strong>r, <strong>the</strong>y raised more than $3,000for activities and programs at Lake Mary Elementary.Second grade students enjoyed a field trip to <strong>the</strong> Helen Stairs Theatre in Sanford on April 12 th , where <strong>the</strong>y wereentertained by a production <strong>of</strong> Pinocchio.Third grade students participated in Annual Ancient Civilizations Day on April 24 th . Classrooms used displays,presentations, food, and costumes to portray different cultures. Ancient China, Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece,Ancient India and <strong>the</strong> Middle Ages were all represented. Second graders and parents <strong>of</strong> third graders wereinvited to tour <strong>the</strong> classrooms and third graders took turns visiting each o<strong>the</strong>r’s cultural presentations during <strong>the</strong>day.Fourth grade students are having a busy April! To celebrate National Poetry Month fourth graders participatedin Lake Mary Elementary’s annual Poetry in <strong>the</strong> Park on April 20 th . Students worked in teams to select, designand perfect a poem to present. The poems were presented on demand during <strong>the</strong> event, as parents, teachers,and students enjoyed <strong>the</strong> presentations.Fourth graders have been busy with Florida History projects. Each student chose a Florida related topic toresearch. Topics ranged from <strong>the</strong> history <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sponge industry to models <strong>of</strong> shrimp boats and <strong>the</strong> Castillo deSan Marcos. Students researched topics and created a display to communicate what <strong>the</strong>y learned. Projectswere on display in <strong>the</strong> auditorium, during <strong>the</strong> last week in April, so <strong>the</strong> entire <strong>school</strong> could learn from <strong>the</strong>ir work.Anne West, Media Specialist, was recently accepted as one <strong>of</strong> fifteen national participants in a summerseminar for teachers sponsored by <strong>the</strong> National Endowment for <strong>the</strong> Humanities. The seminar, “DevelopingCartographic Literacy with Historic Maps”, will provide three weeks <strong>of</strong> study at <strong>the</strong> Newberry Library in Chicago,Illinois. Teachers at <strong>the</strong> seminar will learn to read historical maps in <strong>the</strong>ir original contexts and will have accessto <strong>the</strong> library’s collection <strong>of</strong> historical maps as <strong>the</strong>y develop materials and lessons to complement <strong>school</strong>curriculum.Longwood ElementaryLongwood Elementary School caught <strong>the</strong> reading wave and hosted a Scholastic Book Fair Beach on March22 nd through March 30 th ! Students strolled <strong>the</strong> beach shoreline as <strong>the</strong>y entered <strong>the</strong> media center and created<strong>the</strong>ir very own wish lists. Students shopped and swam in a sea <strong>of</strong> books all week long. On Thursday March 29 thPTA hosted a Book Fair Beach Family Night with hotdogs, chips, and ice-cold s<strong>of</strong>t drinks. Families had <strong>the</strong>opportunity to create <strong>the</strong>ir own book by purchasing <strong>the</strong> “Kluz Build a Book Packet”. Mrs. Eileen L<strong>of</strong>aso has been selected Dividend for <strong>the</strong> month <strong>of</strong> March. Mrs. L<strong>of</strong>aso was awarded a giftcertificate for one large entree courtesy <strong>of</strong> Partin Business Partner, Super Suppers.During March, Partin logged 1,418 Dividend hours. During <strong>the</strong> entire 2006-07 year, <strong>the</strong> <strong>school</strong> logged a total <strong>of</strong>9,558 volunteer hours, 740 hours more hours than a year ago.On Tuesday April 10 th , PTA held a general meeting, and <strong>the</strong> Scholastic Book Fair was also open on thisevening. Despite <strong>the</strong> wea<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>re was a nice turn out.Pine Crest ElementaryPine Crest Elementary School along with <strong>the</strong> PTA held a Country/Western Family Night and dinner on March27 th . For a modest price, families were treated to oversized portions <strong>of</strong> Bar-B-Q chicken and pork, coleslaw,macaroni and cheese, baked beans, and bread. Students and families were entertained by <strong>the</strong> Square DancingClub <strong>of</strong> Sanford as well as a clogging demonstration. Hayrides took place on <strong>the</strong> P.E. field. Over 300 peopleparticipated in <strong>the</strong> exciting evening.Pine Crest faculty and staff ga<strong>the</strong>red to celebrate <strong>the</strong> “New Year” in <strong>the</strong> newly refurbished auditorium on March28 th . Dr. Dianne Lebruto, Principal, utilized <strong>the</strong> new LCD projector to give a presentation congratulating <strong>the</strong> staffon <strong>the</strong>ir hard work and a job well done. After <strong>the</strong> celebration, grade level teams met to develop goals forstudents for <strong>the</strong> “first leg” <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> next <strong>school</strong> year.The new playground equipment has been installed and student reviews have been extremely positive. Thecolor scheme <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> equipment, along with <strong>the</strong> picnic area and <strong>the</strong> famous pine trees as a backdrop, make <strong>the</strong>Pine Crest recess area one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> most enviable in <strong>the</strong> district.On April 10 th , Pine Crest Elementary hosted Literacy Night. Reading Coach Brenda Hicks along with herreading team, Linda Hudick, Shirley Gibson, Rose Wilson, and Diana Smolinski, worked hard to providestudents and families with enjoyable activities and valuable information.Pine Crest Kindergarteners went on a field trip to downtown Sanford in March. Everyone from downtown Sanford was very generous and hospitable and we hope tomake this field trip an annual tradition. Her prize (in addition to bragging rights) was a small s<strong>of</strong>t-sided trainer kit, valued between$30-50.On February 10, 2007, HHS cheerleaders traveled to Tampa to compete in <strong>the</strong> American Championshipsat <strong>the</strong> Ford Amphi<strong>the</strong>ater. At <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> day, Hagerty High School placed 3rd overall in <strong>the</strong>ir division.The squad received a trophy, individual medals, and a cash prize for <strong>the</strong> cheerleading program. Thecheerleaders have been working since September for <strong>the</strong>ir competition season.The HHS Army JROTC HUSKY Battalion Mixed (5 male, 3 female) Raider Team placed second in <strong>the</strong>Florida State Raider Meet Land Navigation/Orienteering competition. A panel <strong>of</strong> judges who are experts in <strong>the</strong> scholastic journalism fieldevaluated entries from 37 states and three o<strong>the</strong>r countries.
