ISARLAB - Inverse Synthetic Aperture RadarSimulation and Processing ToolExecutive SummaryInverse Synthetic Aperture Radar (ISAR) imaging is a relatively mature technique forgenerating 2-dimensional high resolution maps or images of target scattering. Theseimages have the potential to allow the target of interest to be distinguished from othertypes of similar targets (i.e. the classification problem). ISAR images of all categoriesof vehicles (aircraft, ships and land vehicles) have been produced, but the techniquehas found significant military application in airborne maritime surveillance. This ispredominantly because the rotational motions of roll, pitch and yaw induced on a shipby the sea can be substantial and thus provide a ready mechanism by which Dopplerdistributions across the target’s structure can be consistently measured. The resulting2-D image is a projection of the target’s scattering centres onto a range versus Dopplergrid, where the projection plane is defined as being parallel to the radar line-of-sightrange vector and perpendicular to the effective axis of rotation of the target. Toillustrate this effect, a ship undergoing only roll motion will produce an end-onprojection, a pitching ship will generate an elevation view and a yawing ship will yielda plan image.In reality ships undergo a combination of roll, pitch and yaw motions that yield acomplex and continually changing effective axis of rotation. The resulting ISARimages can therefore be a multitude of visually unusual oblique projections. This leadsto the challenge of training radar operators to understand the images acquired by theradar and subsequently, to be able to interpret them sufficiently to perform theclassification task.The Australian Department of Defence is currently in the process of acquiring a newradar system as part of a comprehensive upgrade to the Royal Australian Air Force(RAAF) squadron of P-3C Orion maritime surveillance aircraft. The radar, beingsupplied by Elta of Israel, contains among other features, range profiling and ISARimaging modes. This will be the first radar in the Australian Defence Force (ADF)inventory to incorporate a high resolution imaging capability, which means thattraining of radar operators in the effective use of this new technology is a significantissue. Ideally, training would be conducted using an extensive database of imagerycollected from the operational radar. However, before the system enters routineservice and begins to collect imagery, this database will not be available. One solutionto the problem of insufficient ISAR image data for training is to generate syntheticdata.
