After birth, suffering continues; although amother may take much care for her child, the babystill cries. Why? Because he is suffering. Either a bugis biting, or there is a pain in the stomach or someother malady. Whatever the case, the suffering goeson. The child also suffers when he is forced to go toschool when he does not want to. The child doesnot want to study, but the teacher gives him tasksanyway. If we carefully analyze our lives, we willfind that they are full of suffering. Generally speaking,conditioned souls are not very intelligent, andtherefore they go on suffering without ever inquiringwhy. We should understand, however, that thissuffering is there, and if there is a remedy we musttake advantage of it.The great sage ij,abhadeva instructed his sons inthis way: "My dear boys, in this life you have acquiredthese beautiful bodies. Now you should knowthat they are not meant for sense gratification likethe bodies of hogs and dogs but for spiritual realization."Essentially what l_tabhadeva is saying is thata life of sense gratification is meant for stool eaterslike hogs, and now that we have a higher form oflife, we should not try to imitate the lower forms.Recently we were surprised to see, while walking inCentral Park in New York City, that a group ofyoung American boys and girls were engaged inworshiping hogs. While we were chanting Hare Krqa,these groups of youngsters were chanting, "Hog!Hog! Hog!" They were actually parading with hogsin Central Park and bowing down before them and
