The countryside is also full ofnatural variegatedness in a crude form, whereas in thecity this variegatedness is displayed in a modernizedscientific manner. Poets like Cowper are attracted tothe variegatedness of the country, and prosaic peoplewho live in the city are attracted by the colorfulvarieties manufactured by man. In any case, it isvariegatedness which attracts people both to thecountry and the city. This is the proper explanationof the verse of the Vediinta-sutra.Many so-called sviimis who are so frequentlyattracted by the cities often seek a kind of pleasurein society and feminine friendship. Generally theyare not attracted by the natural beauty of the woods,although they may assume the dress of a man whois meant to live in the woods. Such sviimis are seekingvarieties of enjoyment in matter because theyhave no information of the variegatedness of spirituallife. On the one hand they enjoy variegatedness inmatter, and on the other they deny spiritualvariegatedness to the Absolute. Because they arepledged to the theory of monism and impersonalism,they deny that whatever pertains to matter canpertain also to spirit. According to them, spirit is thedenial of matter. The fact is, however, that spirit isnot a negation of matter, but matter is a pervertedreflection of spirit.The real pleasure of variety exists in spirit withoutdeluding relativity.
