36 <strong>Elevation</strong> <strong>to</strong> Kqa <strong>Consciousness</strong>also.At the present moment there is a great necessityfor brahmar-as, because almost everyone is sudra,for almost everyone is wholly engaged in maintainingthe body, eating, sleeping, mating and defendingallsymp<strong>to</strong>ms of animals and sudras.Society cannot be peaceful unless there are fourdivisions of human beings functioning in harmonywith one another. These four divisions are comprisedof briihmar-as, k§atriyas, vaisyas and sudras. These arediscussed by Krl)a in Bhagavad-g'ita in this way:catur-var[L_yam maya srtamgu[La-karma-vibhagasal)tasya kartaram api mamviddh y alwrtaram avyayam"According <strong>to</strong> the three modes of material natureand the work ascribed <strong>to</strong> them, the four divisionsof human society were created by Me. And, althoughI am the crea<strong>to</strong>r of this system, you should knowthat I am yet the non-doer, being unchangeable."(Bg. 4.13)These four divisions of men in human society arenatural, not artificial, because in the material worldeverything is operating under the influence of thethree modes of material nature-goodness, passionand ignorance. As long as we are in the materialworld, it is not possible <strong>to</strong> classify everyone in thesame category because each and every person isworking under the influence of the modes of materialnature.
