36 Elevation to Kqa Consciousnessalso.At the present moment there is a great necessityfor brahmar-as, because almost everyone is sudra,for almost everyone is wholly engaged in maintainingthe body, eating, sleeping, mating and defendingallsymptoms of animals and sudras.Society cannot be peaceful unless there are fourdivisions of human beings functioning in harmonywith one another. These four divisions are comprisedof briihmar-as, k§atriyas, vaisyas and sudras. These arediscussed by Krl)a in Bhagavad-g'ita in this way:catur-var[L_yam maya srtamgu[La-karma-vibhagasal)tasya kartaram api mamviddh y alwrtaram avyayam"According to the three modes of material natureand the work ascribed to them, the four divisionsof human society were created by Me. And, althoughI am the creator of this system, you should knowthat I am yet the non-doer, being unchangeable."(Bg. 4.13)These four divisions of men in human society arenatural, not artificial, because in the material worldeverything is operating under the influence of thethree modes of material nature-goodness, passionand ignorance.
