What might be the consequences of drug interactions on clients?• Rifampicin (TB medicine) decreases the level of Nevirapine in the body. When thishappens the ART regimen is unable to control HIV virus multiplication and resistanceto ART can occur.• Therefore a person who is being treated with a Rifampicin containing TB regimenshould not be treated for HIV infection with Nevirapine based ART regimen• Therefore it is important for counselors to check and counsel about this drug interaction.2. Emphasize that the main purpose of this session is to help develop skills to supportclients to continue their treatment effectively when facing these issues. For seriousside effects, clients need clinical advice, and counselors must be able to motivateclients to seek help early and refer them to clinicians. For other side effects,counselors should be able to support clients to self-manage, when appropriate. (Treatment teams should usethe client treatment card.)• Informing the client that there might be potentially serious side effects, and tellingthe client to seek help urgently and early if they occur.• Giving immediate attention to side effects: access to the clinic or by phone.• Initiating a discussion about side effects, even if the client does not mention themspontaneously.• Educating the client about drug interaction between Nevirapine (ART medicine) andRifampicin (TB medicine).• Referring the client to peer educators.102
