One of the main problems we face in ART is that, the drugs may stop working and theHIV virus in that person's body develops what we call resistance to treatment. Howcan we define resistance in a simple way? Facilitate a quick brainstorm, and thenshow this definition on flip chart.Resistance is the ability of HIV virus to multiply (replicate) even when ART is takenregularly. Resistance occurs because of changes in structure of HIV virus.2. Clarify that ART resistance occurs when the HIV in a person's body is no longeraffected by medication, and the HIV is therefore able to multiply and destroyCD4 cells. Explain that ART resistance occurs when people do not take theirmedication regularly.3. To help people understand the concept of resistance, take them through Handouts A.37
