BAKERFor all of Napa Valley’s world-renown as a wine-tastingdestination, did you know that the valley also has one of only three“Old Faithful” geysers in the world?Located at the north end of the valley in Calistoga, Old Faithfulmakes for a fun and fascinating afternoon stop between wineries.About every 30 minutes, visitors to “the geysers” are treated to a firstrateshow – an eruption of steam and extremely hot water spraying60 to 100 feet in the air.The term “Old Faithful” refers to geysers that erupt on regularintervals. Water for the Old Faithful Geyser of California comes froman underground river. When this water flows over the hot moltenmagma deep in the earth, it boils, expands and then collects in largecavities. Under tremendous pressure from the heat, the superheatedwater is forced through the fractures and erupts with an outpouringof steam followed by hot spewing water.Old Faithful is surrounded by palm trees and thick bamboo,making for a relaxing and partially shaded setting. There are picnictables with umbrellas and a covered seating area, all with excellentviews of the geyser. The gift shop is stocked with snacks such as icecream bars, chips and a variety ofdrinks, or if you want to make it alunch stop, bring in a picniclunch from town and a bottle ofwine from one of the nearbywineries!Don’t miss some of the otherinteresting features at OldFaithful. Check out the wishingwells that were once used as hotmineral therapy pools. There’salso an informative exhibit areaon geyser eruptions andearthquake predictions, as well asa brief history of the town ofCalistoga. And best of all, there’s apetting zoo with TennesseeFainting Goats, Jacob’s Four HornSheep and Guard Llamas.38Old Faithful Geyser of California is located at 1299 Tubbs Lane inCalistoga. The gift shop is a great place to find unique Old Faithfuland Napa Valley themed souvenirs, including mugs, shot and wineglasses, postcards, T- shirts and sweatshirts in adult and child sizes,hats and visors, keychains, water bottles, pens and much more.Old Faithful is open daily year round from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in thewinter and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the summer.
