Presentationrigidity, surface finishes and creates greater flexibilityby allowing MCS to transfer tooling betweenmachines. With the company increasing its workload in thepetrochemical, environmental and healthcare sectorsthe complexity and diameter range of the partscoming through MCS’s door is continually increasing. To meet this demand, the ISO:9001and ISO:13 485(medical certification) company recently ordereda Tornos Sigma 32 at the Tornos Open House. AsMr Gray continues : “We already have a numberof machines capable of producing parts in the sizerange up to 32 mm diameter. However, besides bringingdesperately needed capacity to the business, the 10-axis Sigma brings a flexibility and ease of usebeyond that of our other machines for complex parts. For example, the Sigma offers the Tornos’ TB-Decoprogramming platform as well as ISO programming. This enables machine setters familiar with ISOcontrols or TB-Deco controls from the Deco machinesto both operate the new Sigma.”Additionally, the Sigma is regarded as the onlymachine tool on the market with identical powerand rigidity on the main and counter-spindle. Withup to 28 tool positions and a large swarf capacity, theSigma will fit in perfectly with the lights-out philosophyat MCS. From a productivity perspective, withan independent roughing tool, the Sigma has thecapability of 3 tools working simultaneously on theworkpiece. As Mr Gray continues : “From our timestudies we expect the Sigma to be considerably fasterthan our alternate turning centres. We have five turningcentres dedicated to one family of parts for onecustomer over a 3 years period and we expect theSigma to make a significant impact on this project.”Looking to the future Mr Gray concludes : “We havemade a significant investment in staff and machinetools since the recession and we are already lookingat new machines and staff for 2012. In 2011 ourbusiness has grown significantly compared to ourbest ever previous year and we project additionalgrowth for 2012, so we have to be prepared by puttingthe correct procedures and plant in place. Weare confident with the level of service and supportwe receive from Tornos that they will be a part of ourfuture growth plans.”Machine Component Systems PLc (MCS)Ravens Bank Business Park2-5 Madeley RoadRedditch, WorcestershireB98 9NB36 decomagazine01 / 12
