ecame Christian Scientists we tend to believe that whathappens in this life is for the best. Although I nearly lost mymind and tried to kill myself when I learned that my breastshad been removed (Dr. Mengers had been forced to takethis step because my life was endangered by the siliconewhich, as a result of the accident, threatened to enter thebloodstream), I now realize that it was the best thing thatever happened to me if only because once Mary-Annrealized that I was really Myron Breckinridge, her attitudetoward me changed completely. Two weeks after I left thehospital where I spent my long convalescence andrehabilitation, we were married in Vegas, and so were ableat last to settle down and live a happy and normal life, raising dogs and working for Planned Parenthood.Incidentally, I noticed a quotation scribbled in one of themargins of the notebook. Something she (I hate to say "I"!)copied from some book about Jean-Jacques Rousseau. Idon't suppose it's giving away any secrets to say that likeso many would-be intellectuals back East Myra neveractually read books, only books about books. Anyway thequotation still sort of appeals to me. It is about howhumanity would have been a lot happier if it had kept to "themiddle ground between the indolence of the primitive stateand the questing activity to which we are prompted by ourselfesteem." I think that is a very fine statement and onewhich, all in all, I'm ready to buy, since it is a proven fact thathappiness, like the proverbial bluebird, is to be found inyour own backyard if you just know where to look.
