IV5.2 Nurses should promote pulmonary rehabilitation. 1aEducation Recommendation6.0 Nurses work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>with</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividuals <strong>with</strong> dyspnea related to COPD will have the IVappropriate knowledge and skills to:■ Recognize the importance <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividual’s self report <strong>of</strong> dyspnea■ Provide COPD patient education <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g:● Smok<strong>in</strong>g cessation strategies● Pulmonary rehabilitation/exercise tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g● Secretion clearance strategies● Breath<strong>in</strong>g retra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g strategies● Energy conserv<strong>in</strong>g strategies● Relaxation techniques● Nutritional strategies● Role/rationale for oxygen therapy● Role/rationale for medications● Inhaler device techniques● Disease self-management and action plans● End-<strong>of</strong>-life issues■ Conduct appropriate referrals to physician and community resourcesOrganization & Policy RecommendationsOrganization & Policy 7.0 Organizations must <strong>in</strong>stitutionalize dyspnea as the <strong>6th</strong> vital sign. IV7.1 Organizations need to have <strong>in</strong> place COPD educators to teach both nurses and patients. IV7.2 Organizations need to ensure that a critical mass <strong>of</strong> health pr<strong>of</strong>essionals are educated IVand supported to implement this guidel<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong> order to ensure susta<strong>in</strong>ability.7.3 Organizations will ensure sufficient nurs<strong>in</strong>g staff to provide essential care, IVsafety and support for <strong>in</strong>dividuals <strong>with</strong> all levels <strong>of</strong> dyspnea.7.4 Organizations should have available sample medication delivery devices, spacer IVdevices, sample templates <strong>of</strong> action plans, visual analogue scales, numericrat<strong>in</strong>g scales, MRC scales and patient education materials.11
