All the boys hada great time while earning 57 merit badges all together.First year camper Josh Glorioso earned 5 merit badges;environmental science, art, wood carving, basketry,leather work and on top of that he earned his Totin’Chip. Even though the pool was closed for half the week;Patrick McGraw, Alex Orda and Mattew Grygo all earnedthe swimming merit badge and David Tekien and BenjaminVega both earned life saving. The Camping meritbadge, an Eagle required, was earned by Alec Sammarco, Paul Prosowicz, Ryan Liedke and Alex Orda. We alsohad our unit elections before we left for Owasippe. We have two new patrol leaders: Patrick McGraw(Panthers) and Mathew Baily (Eagles) and two new assistant patrol leaders: Peter Proctor (Panthers) and LukeGrygo (Eagles). Scoutmaster Clemente appointed Alec Sammarco as Librarian, Paul Prosowicz as Den Chief andAndrew Sammarco as Historian. We offer Girl Scoutingto girls from kindergarten through high school, and currently have over sixty scouts. Our girlscome from not only St. Ferdinand but also other local elementary and high schools and from diversebackgrounds. Girls may enter the program at any age in one of our five troops ‐ Daisy (grades K‐1),Brownie (2‐3), Junior (4‐5), Cadette (6‐8) and Senior/Ambassador (9‐10 & 11‐12). Girls may take advantage ofa variety of experiences in leadership, sports, crafts, outdoor skills, service, career exploration, music, travel,and basic life skills assisted by trained adults. Our annual Registration Night for girls in grade K‐12 will beThursday, September 10th ‐ watch the bulletin and school family folders for more details!However, before our new years gets underway, we are in need of several adults who would like to work particularlywith girls in one of the troops for grades K‐5. Free training is provided by our Girl Scout council in convenient,local locations and some portions can even be done on‐line. August 16, 2009 Twentieth Ordinary Sunday Page ThirteenIn the Gospel passage on this Twentieth Sunday inOrdinary Time, we hear more of Jesus’ Bread of Life discourse,which is found in the sixth chapter of the Gospel of John. It’snot terribly long‐‐about one and a half pages of text in my paperbackNew American Bible for Catholics‐‐but it covers a lotof ground, and perhaps because of this, the Church, via thereadings of the day, presents it to us in parts. Two weeks agowe heard the beginning of the discourse. Last week, roughlythe middle, and this week and next, the finish. Given the significanceof the subject matter, let’s look back at it together, just tosee how Jesus, John, and the Church has laid it down thus far…Two weeks ago, when the crowd left twelve baskets ofleftovers to follow Jesus, he responds, “Amen, amen, I say toyou, you are looking for me not because you saw signs but becauseyou ate the loaves and were filled.” Then he adds somethingthat sets up the entire remainder of the Bread of Life discourse:“Do not work for food that perishes but for the foodthat endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will giveyou.” Mysterious. The crowd reminds Jesus that Moses gavetheir ancestors bread from heaven to eat. Jesus responds thatthe bread didn’t come from Moses, but from the Father, andthen says: “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me willnever hunger…”Last week’s Gospel began with the Jews murmuring,“Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph? Reynolds (john@jrwrites.com)St. Ferdinand Parishlistens to my Father and learns from him comes to me…Amen,amen, I say to you, whoever believes has eternal life.” He thenrepeats, “I am the bread of life,” and adds, “Your ancestors atethe manna in the desert, but they died; this is the bread thatcomes down from heaven so that one may eat it and not die”before delivering the knock‐out punch: “I am the living breadthat came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will livefor ever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life ofthe word.”For emphasis, I suppose, the Church, begins today’sGospel by repeating the verse. A difficult message, it sets thecrowd off even more, but Christ keeps going: “Amen, amen, Isay to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drinkhis blood, you do not have life within you. Whoever eats myflesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise himon the last day.” Jesus then reiterates the point and finisheswith, “This is the bread that came down from heaven. Unlikeyour ancestors who ate and still died, whoever eats this breadwill live forever.” Our belief in the Bread of Life discourse absolutelydefines us as Catholic Christians, but has it all becometoo routine? I heard a priest on Relevant Radio the other daysay that one of the biggest fears of priests in general is takingthe sacred for granted, of losing the wonder and awe.
