Calcarea silicataCALC. SIL.COMMON NAME Calcium silicate.ORIGIN Occurs naturally as wollastonite,but usually prepared chemically.BACKGROUND Calcium silicate is a vitalconstituent <strong>of</strong> glass and cement. In the foodindustry it is used as an anti-sticking agentin salt, rice, and candy.PREPARATION The compound is mixed withlactose sugar and triturated.Remedy pr<strong>of</strong>ileThose for whom Calc. sil. is most suitedtend to feel weak and cold, althoughoverheating makes them feel worse. Theymay seem obsessed with dead friends andrelatives, and may talk to the dead in theirimaginations. Thrift and a lack <strong>of</strong> confidenceare also typical in these people.The remedy is used primarily forthis state <strong>of</strong> mind in conjunctionwith skin conditions, especiallysevere acne or acne rosacea, boils,warts, or abscesses.Symptoms better For lying down,especially on the back.Symptoms worse For cold; for touch;for jarring; in the evening; at night.Calcium sulphuricum syn. CalcareasulphuricaCALC. SULPH.COMMON NAMES Gypsum, calcium sulfate.ORIGIN Found widely in nature, forming in hotsprings and clay beds.BACKGROUND Gypsum is used to makeplaster <strong>of</strong> Paris, which can be formed intoa protective sheath to immobilize injuries.Dr. Schüssler developed the remedy asone <strong>of</strong> his “biochemic” tissue salts(see page 90).PREPARATION Gypsum is mixed withlactose sugar and triturated.Remedy pr<strong>of</strong>ileCalc. sulph. is best suited to people whotend to be timid and fearful, especially<strong>of</strong> birds. They may compensate for theirtimidity by being argumentative and bossy,and can be terribly jealous.Suppurating, yellow discharges <strong>of</strong> pus aretypically associated with this remedy. Calc.sulph. is generally prescribed once the pushas “found a vent.” The pus may affectwounds and other skin conditions, such aseczema, as well as the mucous membranes,glands, and bones. Healing generally occursslowly or not at all. Typical mucousmembranedischarges include thick, yellowcoloredcatarrh accompanying a cold, orthick, yellow, lumpy mucus with a cough.Symptoms better For open air; for heat;for uncovering; for bathing.Symptoms worse For cold and damp; fordrafts; for walking rapidly.See also Severe eczema, page 194Calendula <strong>of</strong>ficinalisCALENDULACOMMON NAMES Pot marigold, marigold.ORIGIN Native to southern Europe, but nowfound throughout the world.BACKGROUND The antiseptic and antiinflammatoryproperties <strong>of</strong> calendula have madeit one <strong>of</strong> the longest established popular herbalremedies. Large amounts are grown in Russia,and it has been nicknamed “Russian penicillin.”PREPARATION The finely chopped, fresh flowersand leaves are steeped in alcohol.Remedy pr<strong>of</strong>ileCalendula is usually given to heal and soothecuts and broken skin. It may prevent thedevelopment <strong>of</strong> disfiguring scars from tornand jagged wounds. In addition, nonalcohol-basedpreparations <strong>of</strong> the remedymay soothe eczema.Calendula is prescribed internally andexternally for leg and varicose ulcers, postoperativewounds, and ruptured muscles ortendons. It may be used to treat torn perinealtissues following childbirth, joint woundswhere there is loss <strong>of</strong> synovial fluid, andbleeding in the gums after a tooth extraction.Symptoms better For lying completely still;for walking.Symptoms worse Fordamp, cloudy weather;for drafts;for eating.CALENDULAOFFICINALIS(Pot marigold)
