51Claire breathed a heartfelt sigh of relief.Despite the excruciating heat in her backside she wasconfident that she could struggle through nine morestrokes. She folded her long slender figure over theback of the chair and waited for her clothing to berearranged.The audience watched in admiration as strokeafter stroke of the long cane cut across Claire’sbehind without even the hint of a wriggle or squirm.After six swipes the Grand Master stepped back togive Claire a momentary breather.Claire gripped the crossbar of the chair withgrim determination. Even for the whop-worldlymember of the Elite the going was getting tough. Shelicked her dry lips and took a deep breath as she feltthe cane tap down.Even Claire was unable to remain totally still asthe cane swiped down again, she flicked her heelback and her buttocks squirmed in consternation. Theequalizing stroke caused even more pandemonium inher central nervous system and she looked as if shemight jump up. Nonetheless she gathered herself andstayed down. The winning stroke caused her to emitan audible groan but pluckily she continued to remainover the back of the chair until she was announced asthe victor.Claire Brooks put her arm around Rosemaryand hugged her. “Jeez I’m glad that’s over with,” shesaid with a sigh of relief, “but I have a feeling thiscompetition is going to prove very painful.”Rosemary hugged Claire back, “After all theseyears,” she gasped, “I finally understand what all thefuss is about.”
