23An Acrimonious RivalryThe pre-contest hug between Nix and Debslacked any pretense of warmth. The publicbitching and gloating between the two legends hadprovoked a frenzy of betting.
The Great Spank-OffNixdown Nixon removed her blazer and handedit to a grubby to hang up for her. As usual heruniform was immaculate. Her blouse neatly pressed,her shoes shone to gleaming and her necktie fastenedwith a perfectly triangular knot. She didn’t share Nix’s penchant for pain andfor all her bragging knew she was at a disadvantage.Nonetheless, she was determined to show thegawking onlookers that she considered it a six withthe tawse a mere trifle.She threw a cheery grin to the audience andgave them a little wave before she folded herselfacross the Grand Master’s lap.For all her faults and foibles nobody couldaccuse Deborah Morton of being a muff and she tookthe six swipes with barely a wriggle or a squirm.As she climbed off Mr Humphries’s lap Debsyawned theatrically raising spontaneous applausefrom her supporters.
