EPrion diseases (eg Jacob Creutzfelt disease, mad cow disease)The Histology laboratory must have specific procedures to prevent aerosolization of caseous material fromgranulomata during frozen sections, to prevent skin punctures or splashing of fluids during examination ofpossible hepatitis or HIV / AIDS cases and to examine and process tissues possibly infected with prion diseases(including formic acid disinfection).832. EAre radioactive and carcinogenic chemicals and substances properly utilized and stored?The use of hoods and special spill kits can be utilized to promote a safe work environment.833. EDoes the histology laboratory meet the general laboratory safety and environment requirements for <strong>COLA</strong>accreditation?The laboratory should be in compliance with all criteria within this subsection, as well as <strong>COLA</strong> general safetycriteria FAC 1 – FAC 9 and FAC 14 – FAC 20.Laboratory EquipmentThe laboratory shall have and must follow policies and procedures for the use of automated and semi-automatedinstruments used in the histopathology laboratory.834. EDo the laboratory policies and procedures specifically address the use of tissue processing equipment, automatedslide stainers (routine and immunohistologic) and electron microscopes?The Histopathology laboratory must have specific policies and procedures for the use of tissue processors,automated slide strainers (routine and immunologic) and electron microscopes which address the maintenance,function checks and operation of these instruments. These policies and procedures should followthose contained in the manufacturer’s literature.835. EDoes the laboratory follow manufacturer’s instructions for pre-analytic, analytic, and post-analytic phases oftesting as applicable?Manufacturer’s instructions may not fully address the requirements in all phases of testing. <strong>COLA</strong> definesspecific elements to be included in all test procedures within its general laboratory requirements. To theextent that the manufacturer’s instructions do not address any of these items, the laboratory must definetheir own requirements as part of the written procedures.836.
