Sustainability Report 2011Energy Consumption and Emission Reduction ProjectsDespite the average 15% increase in product quantitiesin 2011, the efficiency projects we carried out limited theenergy consumption increase to 8%. While the directenergy increase amounted to 8.8%, the indirect energyconsumption increase turned out to be 6.2%. As part ofthe energy efficiency projects conducted, measuringdevices in the consumption sectors are used to measurethe energy consumption and question the energy efficiencyin that work unit covered. Once the technical and financialaspects of a possible need for an energy efficiency practicehas been examined regarding that area, the project isprepared with the approval of the management and is thenimplemented. Turkey plants completed 173 energyefficiency projects saving 13,688,867 kWh on electricityand 1,748,444 m 3 on natural gas; thereby ensuring that109,516 GJ in total was saved on energy.Thanks to those projects, the total greenhouse gas emissionwas reduced by 3,761 tons of CO 2 directly and by 7,329tons of CO 2 indirectly, hence leading to 11,090 tons ofCO 2 reduction in total. Some of those projects aredescribed below:We switched to efficient illumination systems thanks to theproject completed at the Refrigerator Plant to increaseillumination efficiency. As part of the project, 1,200illumination units were replaced with efficient illuminationsystems, enabling us to save 1,402,694 kWh on electricityannually. The electricity saved prevented 751 tons of CO 2greenhouse gas from being emitted.At our Electronics Plant, we improved and reconditionedthe equipment at the facilities producing the steam weneed in our production process. Thanks to the project, wesaved 45,360 kWh on electricity and 220,000 m 3 on naturalgas. The electricity and natural gas saved helped usprevent 496 tons of CO 2 from being emitted.We materialized a project to increase the efficiency of thetransfer presses we use in production at our CookingAppliances Plant. The kaizen work we did and the projectsundertaken to enhance speed resulted in 8.3% increasein efficiency while also ensuring that 392,066 kWh wassaved on electricity annually. The electricity saved helpedus prevent 210 tons of CO 2 from being emitted.Within the scope of cooperation between universities andindustry, various studies were carried out in 2011 todetermine potential improvement opportunities of thecooling system as part of an MA thesis titled “PlasticInjection Cooling System Optimization” at Y›ld›z TechnicalUniversity Mechanical Engineering Department.Motors5%Venting/Heating/Cooling2%Electricity18%In 2010, we realized an energy pré-étude in our 8 facilities in Turkey where the energy management system was examined. After theevaluation by an independent body authorized by Republic of Turkey General Directorate of Renewable Energy, all our plants obtainedthe “Gold Certificate.” Arçelik A.fi. is the first and only firm in the world white goods sector to obtain this certificate. We broke our ownrecord and set the bar higher through the improvements we achieved in 2011 when 4 of our plants in Turkey this time obtained the“Platinum Certificate”, which makes Arçelik A.fi. the first and only firm in the world white goods sector to obtain “Platinum Certificate”.Arçelik A.fi. won three prizes in the Sustainable Environmentally Friendly Product and Practice Competition held within the scope ofthe ISO Environment Awards contest and organized by the Istanbul Chamber of Commerce (ISO) to raise environmental awarenessand contribute to the efforts to harmonize the environmental legislation with the EU norms. Operating in line with our vision “Respectsthe Globe, Respected Globally”, Arçelik A.fi. Dishwasher Plant received the Large Scale Corporation Sustainable Environment ProductTop Prize for its “Cactus” dishwasher and the Washing Machine Plant won the Large Scale Corporation Sustainable Environment ProductSecond Prize for its “Ekonomist” line washing machines while finally Arçelik A.fi. Standing United for Education Corporate SocialResponsibility Program received the second prize in the Large Scale Corporate Social Responsibility for the Environment Categoryfor the contest organized with the Theme “Environment”.23
