The main areas of interest are in Andalucia, Spain, and <strong>the</strong> Alpine metallogenic belt thatextends through sou<strong>the</strong>rn Europe, <strong>the</strong> Carpathian Mountains and through Bulgaria, Greece andTurkey to <strong>the</strong> Caucasus Mountains.The Slovak Republic (Slovakia)Slovakia is a land-locked state located in central Europe. It is bordered by Austria, <strong>the</strong> CzechRepublic, Poland, Ukraine and Hungary. After <strong>the</strong> Sec<strong>on</strong>d World War it became part of <strong>the</strong> Soviet block, but Soviet influencecollapsed in 1989 and Czechoslovakia gained its independence. In 1993, <strong>the</strong> former Czechoslovakiaagreed to separate and <strong>the</strong> Slovak Republic ("Slovakia") came into existence. Base-metal and coalproducti<strong>on</strong> was substantial during <strong>the</strong> Soviet era with coal, gold, silver, magnesite, limest<strong>on</strong>e,dolomite and gravel being mined today. The sec<strong>on</strong>d oldest mining institute in <strong>the</strong> world is located atBanská Štiavnica and <strong>the</strong> populati<strong>on</strong> is proud of <strong>the</strong>ir mining heritage.Mineral explorati<strong>on</strong> in Slovakia is administered by <strong>the</strong> Divisi<strong>on</strong> of Geology and Natural Resources,which is part of <strong>the</strong> Ministry of Envir<strong>on</strong>ment.
