Environment, Safety andSocial ResponsibilityThe practicalimplementation ofthe Company’s visionof ‘safe production’has seen a substantialfall in injuries on arange of measures.Health and SafetyThe focus for health and safety hasbeen the promotion of behaviouralchange with an emphasis on hazardand risk identification, andmanagement. This approach has beeneffective with a reduction in safetyincidents during the year. The visionfor safety at the Company’s sites is‘safe production’ where no job is carriedout in a manner which might resultin harm to an individual. This visionof ‘safe production’ is designed to leadto the ultimate goal of reducing andeliminating all injuries.The Lost Time Injury Frequency Rate(LTIFR) fell to 1.45 (2008: 4.5). TheClassified Injury Frequency Rate fellfrom 16 to 6 by year’s end,comparedto the W.A. Gold Mining Industryaverage for 2007/08 of 10.8.The improving safety performancehas also reflected the efforts of sitemanagement teams to maintain a highvisibility in the workplace. Time in thefield is one measure that is used to trackthe efforts of the leadership team to bevisible and proactively lead by example.Training is an important aspect ofproviding a safe workplace and thereare ongoing programs to train theworkforce in hazard identification,risk assessment, incident investigation,emergency response, first aid and otherrelated programs. The Company hasimplemented a system to record healthand safety training and to automaticallyflag when re-training or renewal is due.This system will ensure there is a highlevel of compliance with all of theCompany’s training requirements.Social ResponsibilityUnderpinning St Barbara’s Vision isa key principle of building beneficialrelationships with the communitieswith which we interact. The Companyacknowledges the traditionallandholders in the areas in whichwe operate as well as the localcommunities where we live and work.St Barbara holds a number ofIndigenous Liaison meetings eachyear with representatives of thetraditional landholders. These meetingsallow the Company to update therepresentatives as well as discussingdevelopments and opportunities.12
