St Barbara Classified Injury Frequency RateJuly 08 – June 0920161284Jul-08Aug-08Sep-08Oct-08Nov-08Dec-08St Barbara’s managers at Leonora andSouthern Cross regularly brief therespective Shires and local businesscommunities on the Company’s activities.A number of the events in the districtsare supported by the Company throughsponsorship and participation.EnvironmentThe Company continues to focus onwater conservation and alternativesources of supply at both SouthernCross and Leonora. High quality wateruse is monitored closely with successfulreductions in its consumption. In thecase of Southern Cross, a concertedeffort led to a reduction of potablewater consumption in excess of 40,000litres per day. Another example is theuse of process water, recycled fromthe gold processing circuit, to replacepotable water in the cyanide spargingprocess, resulting in a saving of at least100,000 litres every four to five days.The Company completed its EnergyEfficiency Opportunities assessment atSouthern Cross and the key findings aresummarised in a report that is availableon the SBM website. The Companyhas followed up the assessment witha number of initiatives that have alreadyprovided energy savings. The energyassessment for Leonora is plannedfor early 2010.An environmentally sustainable miningaccommodation village constructedat Leonora last year, was awarded aCertificate of Merit in the 2009 GoldenGecko Awards sponsored by the W.A.Jan-09Feb-09St Barbara WA Gold Industry 07-08Mar-09Apr-09May-09Jun-09Department of Mines and Petroleum(www.dmp.wa.gov.au/goldengecko).The Golden Gecko Awards recogniseexcellence and leadership, andacknowledge outstanding contributionsmade in environmental performance.These are highly respected by theresources sector in Western Australiabecause of the rigorous assessmentprocess.St Barbara has commenced thedevelopment of a company-wideEnvironmental Management System,conforming to the ISO1400 seriesstandards for EnvironmentalManagement Systems, which willfacilitate the continuous improvementof the Company’s environmentalmanagement performance.RehabilitationThis year’s rehabilitation programpredominantly focused on legacy areas.At the Leonora Operations, rehabilitationwas undertaken at the Harbour Lightsand Tarmoola sites. Work at HarbourLights focused on improving the stabilityof the decommissioned tailings storagefacility with addition of stable cappingmaterial and additional profiling andripping of the landform. Profiling andripping was also undertaken onlandforms and hardstand areas whichhad not been rehabilitated in the past.Approximately 85 hectares of adecommissioned tailings storage facilitywere rehabilitated at Tarmoola. Worksundertaken included final capping of thefacility and contouring the landform toimprove stability. Remaining work to becompleted in the coming year includestop-soiling and seeding of the tailingsstorage facility. As a result of therehabilitation work completed,a significant environmental bondreduction has been achieved forthe Leonora Operations.St Barbara continued to integratecurrent surface mining projects withrehabilitation of legacy sites atSouthern Cross Operations. Areastargeted were the Nevoria and GVGsites due to ongoing surface miningprojects in these areas. Existing,partially rehabilitated areas, andlandforms from legacy mining atNevoria were rehabilitated from wasterock mined the Norton open pit.Final rehabilitation works, includingprofiling and seeding, weresubsequently undertaken on theselandforms following the completionof mining at Norton. Work alsocontinued on capping, profiling andtop-soiling the GVG tailings storagefacility with materials generated fromsurface mining projects in thesurrounding area.stbarbara.com.au – Annual Report 2009: 13
