It certa<strong>in</strong>ly doesn'tapply to students at PS 41. They are quiteclear about where <strong>the</strong>y are headed: Tocollege.The elementary school on Clawson Avenuehas kicked off its unique "We're Go<strong>in</strong>g toCollege/Vamos a la Universidad" <strong>in</strong>itiativeFirst-graders at PS 41 with Ben Kaplan, <strong>the</strong> author of 'How To Go ToCollege Almost for Free.' (Staten Island Advance/Irv<strong>in</strong>g Silverste<strong>in</strong>)with a rally<strong>in</strong>g cry to students and parentsthat it's never too early to start th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>gabout college and sett<strong>in</strong>g career goals.The school has partnered with <strong>the</strong> non-profit, PENCIL (www.pencil.org), to promote college and careerread<strong>in</strong>ess for all students, beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> k<strong>in</strong>dergarten. PENCIL is an organization that pairs volunteers from<strong>the</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess and corporate sector with <strong>the</strong> city's public schools, to provide resources and fund<strong>in</strong>g for specialprograms.The PS 41 college <strong>in</strong>itiative is aimed at boost<strong>in</strong>g academic achievement by encourag<strong>in</strong>g students to set goalsfor <strong>the</strong>mselves and by recogniz<strong>in</strong>g and reward<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m for achievement. Teachers will be <strong>in</strong>corporat<strong>in</strong>gcollege-<strong>the</strong>med activities <strong>in</strong>to lesson plans and <strong>the</strong> curriculum. Activities might <strong>in</strong>clude read<strong>in</strong>g ageappropriatebooks about go<strong>in</strong>g to college; research<strong>in</strong>g careers; writ<strong>in</strong>g about a famous college graduate, oridentify<strong>in</strong>g a list of well-known colleges on a map. Group activities <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> works <strong>in</strong>clude a field trip to <strong>the</strong>College of Staten Island <strong>in</strong> March, and a career day <strong>in</strong> May."We want to <strong>in</strong>spire students to dream big, to plant <strong>the</strong> idea of achiev<strong>in</strong>g a higher education and give <strong>the</strong>m<strong>the</strong> resources <strong>the</strong>y need to prepare <strong>the</strong>m for success," expla<strong>in</strong>ed PS 41 Pr<strong>in</strong>cipal Elise Feldman.Celebrated author and Harvard University graduate Ben Kaplan ("How to Go to College Almost for Free")Page 123 of 161
