Michael R. Daniels Puts a Student Sp<strong>in</strong> on Alumni RelationsJanuary 03, 2012Spend a few m<strong>in</strong>utes with Michael R. Daniels and you quickly get a sense of someone who istotally at home with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world of higher education. He should be, because that’s what he’sbeen do<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> one way or ano<strong>the</strong>r for his entire life!Daniels jo<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong> St. John’s University family last October as Associate Director of AlumniRelations for Academic and Student Programs. He is responsible for <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>itiation andcoord<strong>in</strong>ation of all programs <strong>in</strong>volv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>teraction between <strong>the</strong> Office of Alumni Relations and<strong>the</strong> academic schools and colleges of <strong>the</strong> University, particularly those that foster a connectionbetween current students and alumni, such as <strong>the</strong> Alumni Insider’s View…Program (AIV).“In <strong>the</strong> few months that I’ve been here I’ve come to realize that St. John’s has very dedicatedand successful alumni, many of whom enjoy <strong>the</strong> opportunity to share <strong>the</strong>ir particular expertisewith our students,” he said. “My goal is to make AIV <strong>the</strong> best program that it can possibly be.The <strong>in</strong>teraction between our alumni and students is what makes this program so special, and<strong>the</strong> more we can br<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m toge<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> easier it will be for both groups to form a relationshipthat is mean<strong>in</strong>gful and productive over a period of time. AIV is a wonderful program, and I see itgett<strong>in</strong>g better and better every semester.”No stranger to work<strong>in</strong>g with students, Daniels has spent his professional life <strong>in</strong> roles <strong>in</strong> whichstudent engagement was <strong>the</strong> primary focus. His career began tak<strong>in</strong>g shape while he wasearn<strong>in</strong>g his undergraduate degree <strong>in</strong> American Literature from <strong>the</strong> State University of New YorkPage 26 of 161
