Baruch (2-3 CUNY, 8-9 overall) had <strong>the</strong> Dolph<strong>in</strong>s (4-0, 11-4) on <strong>the</strong> ropes after us<strong>in</strong>g a 27-8 run spann<strong>in</strong>gboth halves to erase a 12-po<strong>in</strong>t deficit and take a 52-45 lead with 11 m<strong>in</strong>utes rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g.The Dolph<strong>in</strong>s still trailed 60-54 when Lameik Black’s dunk off a Jordan Young pass started a 12-3 run thatwas capped by Tibbs’ driv<strong>in</strong>g layup and three foul shots when he fouled on a trey.The 66-63 advantage didn’t last long.Baruch senior guard Chris Beauchamp hit a floater <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> lane and his 15-foot jumper put <strong>the</strong> Bearcats up 69-68 at <strong>the</strong> 1:30 mark.That’s when Tibbs took over, tak<strong>in</strong>g freshman guard Rob Goldste<strong>in</strong> off <strong>the</strong> dribble and drill<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>gshot to <strong>the</strong> right of <strong>the</strong> free-throw l<strong>in</strong>e. Freshman forward Javon Cox stole <strong>the</strong> ball from a dribbl<strong>in</strong>g Goldste<strong>in</strong>on Baruch’s f<strong>in</strong>al possession and Tibbs ran out <strong>the</strong> clock <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> backcourt.“I tried to create, not necessarily to shoot, and <strong>the</strong> freshman (Goldste<strong>in</strong>) is a great defender,” said Tibbs,who scored a game-high 19 po<strong>in</strong>ts and had a team-high seven rebounds. “They were send<strong>in</strong>g double teamslater <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> game. Fortunately, I made <strong>the</strong> shot.”Said <strong>CSI</strong> coach Tony Petosa: “They had a hand <strong>in</strong> his (Tibbs) face. Tommy made a very tough shot. Hesaved <strong>the</strong> game for us.”Baruch shot 51 percent from <strong>the</strong> floor, outrebounded <strong>the</strong> Dolph<strong>in</strong>s 33-28, and shared <strong>the</strong> ball <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>halfcourt offense. Beauchamp scored 16 po<strong>in</strong>ts, while CJ Jurewicz-Johnson had 13, Mickey Abbatiello 12 andGoldste<strong>in</strong> 11.“They moved <strong>the</strong> ball very well,” said Petosa. “They were very crisp. We were <strong>in</strong> a lot of trouble for awhile<strong>the</strong>re.”Alesi also tossed a compliment <strong>in</strong> <strong>CSI</strong>’s direction.“They’re an excellent team,” he said of <strong>the</strong> 11-4 Dolph<strong>in</strong>s. “They’ve proven <strong>the</strong>mselves time and time aga<strong>in</strong>this season.“I thought our guys really competed. I was real happy with <strong>the</strong>ir focus. We executed what we wanted to andwe took away some th<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>the</strong>y like to do. I th<strong>in</strong>k we took a step forward today.“If we had ano<strong>the</strong>r 30 seconds, maybe we would have hit <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g shot.”Instead, it was Tibbs was seems to have <strong>the</strong> market on those honors.Page 80 of 161
