Throughout its history, The New Yorkermagazine has published outstandingpieces of writing in a variety of forms:poetry, short stories, essays, reports, profiles, editorials and reviews. Because of thequality of work which appears in each issue, TheNew Yorker serves as an exciting and refreshingyay to teach students the art of good writing.English teachers John Austin and Tad Roachused The New Yorker throughout the year in theirjunior and senior year English classes, and thisspring taught a senior seminar that concentratedon the magazine and student writing based on thearticles provided by The New Yorker. By readingweekly editions of the magazine, students studieda variety of prose models that ignited enthusiasmfor writing. Students completed the course bywriting their own 'Talk of the Town" pieces,"Reports at Large" articles, profiles, letters orreviews. Student interest in writing has developedsteadily and the quality of articles submitted forpublication has improved through the term. The deputy editor of The New Yorker magazine,Charles McGrath, was invited to speak to the facultyas its annual faculty memorial speaker. Healso had the opportunity to visit some classes andaddress questions that the students had about theediting, production and standards of the magazine.Chip McGrath offered encouragement to manyyoung writers emphasizing the dedication andrevision necessary to write well.
