Noxontalkpring affords us the luxury of speaking toyou, not so much as distant comrades, but rather, more as approaching friends. The season lends itself to countlessexcuses to visit the St. Andrew's campus: Arts'Weekend, Commencement, reunions, or simply aquick stop off Interstate 95 on your way to yoursummer retreat. Think of this bulletin as a roadmap to lead you and prepare you for the currentstate of affairs on campus and beyond. On campus, you will note of special interest:first and sadly, Ginny DiGennaro is retiring, aftersixteen years as our School nurse. On a happiernote, read about Prep 9, our successful minorityrecruitment program that prepares, counsels andsupports each student. Thanks to Earth Day, wehave an earth conscious campus. We can boast awell-read English department and student bodynow that several classes subscribe to The NewYorker. Two students report on some extracurriculars:Sam Stegeman '91 shares some insightsfrom his volunteer experience at the ChristianaHospital and Conor O'Dwyer '90 takes us out intobear country with his account of the search for ablack bear. Earl Walker '90 brought fame to SASwhen he won the National High School WrestlingChampionshjp at 145 pounds. Speaking of glory, read of alumnus Mike Hill '71 whose involvement,n civil war re-enactments led to a role as an extraill Oscar-winning film, Glory. We hope you can absorb some of the energyand excitement that has recently been captured inmagazines and newspapers throughout Europe. Infact, the acclaim that Dead Poets Society won inEurope has sent a barrage of foreign reporters tous. The well-known weekly French magazine,Madame Figaro, sent a photographer and a journalistfrom Paris to capture the Welton Academyof the '90's (SAS). They spent three days on campuscompiling information and photos for the 12page photographic spread. Likewise, L' Express, the Time magazine of France, sent two membersof their staff to cover the School. Calls from Italyand Argentina also led to press coverage of SAS indistant countries; Corriere della Serra, a "wellrespected" Italian paper published in Milan, sentits New York correspondent. Newspapers fromHolland and Portugal found and interviewed currentSAS residents harking from their distantshores: respectively, the van Buchems andAndrew Virden '92.If you are not as lucky as these European travelers,if your next visit to campus must await coolertemperatures, consider this bulletin a summerstaple. We hope it will tide you over until yournext visit to Noxontown shores.EDITORSST·ANDREW'SB u L L E T I NContentsFrom the HeadmasterPageIntroducing Our Newest Alumni - College Destinations 4Earl Walker '90 is National High School Wrestling Champ 5By Ashton RichardsHeadaches, Heartaches, Broken Bones: Mrs. D Bids Farewell toHer Thermometers and Ace Bandages 6A Commitment to Student Diversity: The Prep 9 Program 8By Donna Kinney SpeersOn Earth Day...we observed, reflected, cleaned up, enhancedand supported 10The Bear Hunt 13By Conor O'Dwyer '90A Library Wish List 14Subscribing to Learning: Students Read The New Yorker 15By Tad RoachWhy Am 1Volunteering in a Hospital When I Could be Sleeping? 16By Sam StegemanCivil War Re-enactments Lead to Glory for Mike Hill '71 17Noteworthy 18Class Notes 24COVER: Published in the 1990 U.s.TRUSTEESRowing Magazine Regatta Calendar,A.
