Bill says he approached his sabbatical.with a "goal of dabbling." He has taken courses Inwriting and photography, attended lectures, taughtliteracy to local residents, attended the symphonyand traveled throughout New Mexico. The greenchilis and the hot, dry air agree with Bill-in fact,he is already looking into how to moveKiwaydin's winter office from Greenwich,Connecticut to New Mexico.Monica Matouk '84 and John Austin '83have been accepted in the Ph.D. program atColumbia University next year. John will bestudying English and Monica will be in theComparative Literature program. They will bothcontinue their summer studies at OxfordUniversity under the auspices of MiddleburyCollege.On April 16, while most of us were posting ourtaxes, Ripley Greppin was running the Boston.Aarathon. Training for the race since the first ofthe year, Ripley logged 720 miles and wore outthree pairs of running shoes. Despite some devastatingheat which almost defeated her 15 milesinto the race, she finished the 27-mile race in threehours and thirty-nine minutes, which qualifies herto run again next year.John Niles has resigned as Director ofAdmissions, a position he has held since 1976. Heis returning to his beloved New England to headthe admissions staff at Groton.Larry and Gloria Walker have moved to thedistinctive historic Naudain House on Route 896,formerly the residence of the headmaster ofBroadmeadow School.Summer PlansIn July Jon and Joan O'Brien plan to travel toSouth Africa. Highlights of their trip include avisit to Pat and Ronnie Todd (headmaster) andRob (past exchange faculty member) and AnnCampbell-Atkins at St. Alban's College. Theyalso plan to visit St. Mark's College in the town ofJane Furse where Becky Wendell '89 and LeeannaVarga '87 have been on the faculty.In August, Joan will attend the Stanley KingCounseling Institute Workshop to be held at""ountain Valley School in Colorado.Ripley Greppin will continue work on herMALS at Georgetown University. Alice Ryan willbe renting a studio apartment in July on the LeftBank in Paris. She is looking forward to visitingJocelyne Raux. Melissa Brown will lead sevenBill CarpenterSAS students to Spain to make videotapes ofauthentic Spanish dialogues to be used as part ofthe Spanish department curriculum next year.Herve Le Guilloux will take six students-three ofwhom are from SAS-to France. The students willreside with French families in Brittany, and takeweekly excursions to sightseeing attractions.Herve will be a grader for the French AdvancedPlacement Examination in New Jersey in June.Tad Roach will pursue a National Endowmentof the Humanities Fellowship to study Hawthorneat the University of Buffalo.
