62The influence of active prophylaxis on epidemiology of hepatitis BKozielewicz D., Dybowska D.Department of Infectious Diseases and Hepatology CM UMK in Bydgoszcz, PolandIntroduction: In 1993 in accordance with the intensive program of prevention andcombating hepatitis B in Poland, the following groups received vaccinations: patientsscheduled to undergo an operation, chronically ill patients and persons who have beenin close contact with those infected with HBV.Carrying out all the guidelines of the program resulted in the decrease in contractinghepatitis B from 34.6/100 thousand in 1993 to 4.43/100 thousand in 2003.The purpose of the article was to analyze the epidemiological aspects and the way inwhich active prophylaxis was run in the patients hospitalized due to hepatitis B.Methods: In the years 1998-2004 142 patients were hospitalized in Infectious DiseasesClinic in Bydgoszcz. On the basis of medical history and the results of biochemical andserological examinations the patients were diagnosed with hepatitis B.In the group of 142 patients there were 59 women and 83 men in the age bracket of16-84 years old (average age 47 years old). In each case attempts were made toestablish the way of contracting hepatitis B.
