Computing (Head <strong>of</strong> Department: Mr D G Smith)IntroductionInformation technology skills are increasingly viewed as essential by employers anduniversities. The Computing department <strong>of</strong>fers a range <strong>of</strong> courses aimed at studentswishing to develop their information technology skills, whether they be generalvocational skills to help them in the workplace, or more specific technical trainingdesigned to assist students in career paths directly involving computers.Advanced <strong>High</strong>er (Computing)OverviewAdvanced <strong>High</strong>er Computing extends the work completed in <strong>High</strong>er, focusing onS<strong>of</strong>tware Development and Computer Networking. The course is ideally suited tostudents wishing to prepare for further study <strong>of</strong> Information Technology, and providespractical experience <strong>of</strong> project management and development skills which aretransferable to a wide range <strong>of</strong> disciplines.PrerequisitesIt is expected that pupils will have a pass in <strong>High</strong>er Computing.UnitsThis course consists <strong>of</strong> three units. Each unit is completed by passing an internalUnit Assessment and successfully carrying out a series <strong>of</strong> practical tasks.1 S<strong>of</strong>tware DevelopmentS<strong>of</strong>tware Development continues the studies started at <strong>High</strong>er. The s<strong>of</strong>twaredevelopment process is looked at in more detail, and advance programmingtechniques, such as sorting algorithms and file access, are introduced.2 Developing a S<strong>of</strong>tware SolutionDeveloping a S<strong>of</strong>tware Solution is mainly an extended coursework project whichprovides the opportunity for students to complete an entire s<strong>of</strong>tware developmentcycle from the initial idea to final testing and evaluation.3 Computer NetworkingComputer Networking extends the studies started at <strong>High</strong>er, extending studentknowledge <strong>of</strong> networking protocols and investigating network security issues such asdenial <strong>of</strong> service attacks and encryption.Course assessmentThe overall grade for the course is calculated by combining marks from thecoursework project and the final examination:Coursework 40%Final examination 60%16Form 6 Subject ChoiceMarch 2012
