Latin (Head <strong>of</strong> Department: Mr J Meehan)Advanced <strong>High</strong>erThis course builds upon the work done in Intermediate 2 and <strong>High</strong>er Latin andconsists <strong>of</strong> three units:1 TranslationCandidates will further develop their knowledge <strong>of</strong> the grammar and syntax <strong>of</strong> theLatin language. This will be done through the study <strong>of</strong> extracts from two <strong>of</strong> thegreatest <strong>of</strong> Roman writers, the poet Virgil and the historian Livy. In the final examcandidates will be required, with the help <strong>of</strong> a dictionary, to translate an unpreparedpassage from each <strong>of</strong> these writers.2 InterpretationThis involves the study <strong>of</strong> important works <strong>of</strong> Latin literature with a view tounderstanding the aims <strong>of</strong> the writers and the literary techniques which they employ.At the moment the area <strong>of</strong> Latin literature which we study is love poetry, mainlythrough the writings <strong>of</strong> Ovid, whose influence on later European culture, in particularliterature and art, has probably been greater than that <strong>of</strong> any other Latin poet. In thefinal exam candidates will be required to answer questions about the content andtechnique <strong>of</strong> passages studied in class.3 InvestigationAs in other Advanced <strong>High</strong>er subjects, candidates are required to write a 4000-worddissertation, which can be on any aspect <strong>of</strong> the Roman world and Roman culturewhich interests them.Advanced <strong>High</strong>er Latin is not listed in the column options: this will allow candidates tonegotiate a suitable timetable with the department.<strong>High</strong>erThis course involves three units, which will be studied in parallel:1 TranslationThis involves developing further the knowledge <strong>of</strong> Latin grammar and syntaxacquired at Intermediate 2. In the external assessment pupils will be required totranslate into English, with the help <strong>of</strong> a word list, a piece <strong>of</strong> Latin prose which theyhave not seen before.2 Verse InterpretationPupils will read - partly in the original Latin and partly in English translation - theRudens <strong>of</strong> Plautus (a Roman comic play) and in the external assessment will berequired to answer a variety <strong>of</strong> questions which test their knowledge andunderstanding <strong>of</strong> the play.3 Prose InterpretationPupils will read - partly in the original Latin and partly in English translation - extractsfrom the work <strong>of</strong> Cicero, the greatest and most famous <strong>of</strong> Roman prose writers. Inthe external assessment they will be required to answer a number <strong>of</strong> questions whichtest their knowledge and understanding <strong>of</strong> what they have read.Form 6 Subject ChoiceMarch 201231
