Physical Education(Head <strong>of</strong> Department: Mr A A Campbell)<strong>High</strong>er<strong>High</strong>er Physical Education involves both practical performance and classroom-basedtheory lessons. Performance is the prime focus <strong>of</strong> the course. Practical experientiallearning provides the opportunity to develop high standards <strong>of</strong> performance. Thetheory side, which will involve the use <strong>of</strong> IT skills, allows pupils to gain an in-depthknowledge and understanding <strong>of</strong> practical performance and the ways in which it canbe improved.Recommended entryPupils who wish to study <strong>High</strong>er Physical Education are expected to demonstrate thefollowing:Evidence <strong>of</strong> participation in extra-curricular sport for the school over a number<strong>of</strong> years. Achievement <strong>of</strong> a pass in <strong>High</strong>er English or a high pass at Intermediate 2 Evidence <strong>of</strong> previous experiences in a wide variety <strong>of</strong> sports.CourseWhile the activities included in the course can be negotiated, facilities place certainrestrictions on which sports can be <strong>cover</strong>ed. It is envisaged that badminton andbasketball will form the backbone <strong>of</strong> the practical work. Individual expertise willhowever be taken into account and where possible accommodated.The course comprises two mandatory units as follows:1 PerformanceCandidates’ performance will be internally assessed with the dual purpose <strong>of</strong>determining both unit achievement and course achievement. Performance should beassessed in each candidate’s best two activities from the course.2 Analysis <strong>of</strong> PerformanceThis element <strong>of</strong> the course is assessed externally by means <strong>of</strong> a written examination<strong>of</strong> 2½ hours’ duration. The examination paper will be grouped into four sectionscorresponding to the four areas <strong>of</strong> Analysis <strong>of</strong> Performance, which are: Performance Appreciation Preparation <strong>of</strong> the Body Skills and Technique Structures, Strategies and CompositionAssessmentPerformance 40%Analysis <strong>of</strong> Performance 60%42Form 6 Subject ChoiceMarch 2012
