Modern Languages (Head <strong>of</strong> Department: Mr N A MacKinnon)Advanced <strong>High</strong>er – French / German / SpanishThe Advanced <strong>High</strong>er courses follow on specifically and deliberately from <strong>High</strong>erboth in design and content. Study <strong>of</strong> a language at Advanced <strong>High</strong>er will allowstudents to develop confidence in their ability to communicate in the target languageon cultural topics, current affairs and issues <strong>of</strong> general interest. The skills <strong>of</strong>expressing opinions and exchanging ideas learnt at <strong>High</strong>er will be developed furtherin keeping with their greater maturity and language pr<strong>of</strong>iciency.The Advanced <strong>High</strong>er courses are designed to appeal to a range <strong>of</strong> students, not justpotential linguists. The value <strong>of</strong> an award at this level as an ancillary skill and interms <strong>of</strong> future employment prospects cannot be over-estimated.Course detailsEach course consists <strong>of</strong> 2 units: The Language unit (80 hours) is designed to develop the relevant skills andcompetencies, in the context <strong>of</strong> three broad themes related to current affairs:o topical issueso personal and social issueso environmental issues. The Extended Reading / Viewing unit (40 hours) focuses on the study <strong>of</strong>modern literature, film, drama or a background topic.A further 40 hours are allocated for induction, support, preparation, internalassessment and practice for external assessment. Additionally, candidates have tocomplete two pieces <strong>of</strong> written work for the Folio (see below).Successful completion <strong>of</strong> the course will enable progression to higher education(HNC / HND / Degree) and employment in such areas as the arts and socialsciences, hospitality, catering and tourism, languages, law, IT, business and themedia.AssessmentAssessment is seen as an integral part <strong>of</strong> the learning and teaching process, withUnit Assessments <strong>cover</strong>ing the four skills <strong>of</strong> Speaking, Reading, Listening andWriting. External assessment will provide the basis for grading attainment in thecourse award.FolioA folio <strong>of</strong> work relating to the content <strong>of</strong> the optional unit will be externally marked forexternal course assessment. For candidates taking the Extended Reading /Viewing option, the folio will consist <strong>of</strong> two essays in English, <strong>of</strong> approximately 750words each.Form 6 Subject ChoiceMarch 201235
