Geography (Head <strong>of</strong> Department: Miss J L Stewart)Advanced <strong>High</strong>erThe principal aim <strong>of</strong> Advanced <strong>High</strong>er Geography is to develop a detailedunderstanding <strong>of</strong> aspects <strong>of</strong> the contemporary world by using the concepts andtechniques <strong>of</strong> geographical analysis. All pupils who proceed to the Advanced <strong>High</strong>ercourse in Geography will have obtained a good pass at <strong>High</strong>er and will be committedto developing independent learning in a context <strong>of</strong> supported study. During theAdvanced <strong>High</strong>er course pupils should develop:an understanding <strong>of</strong> the ways in which people and the environment interact inresponse to physical and human processesunderstanding <strong>of</strong>, and concern for the environmentgeneral skills <strong>of</strong> research, analysis, synthesis, evaluation and presentationincluding the use <strong>of</strong> ITexpertise in fieldwork techniquesexpertise in the use <strong>of</strong> a range <strong>of</strong> maps, diagrams and statistical techniquesThe Advanced <strong>High</strong>er course comprises three units:1 Geographical Methods and Techniques which include fieldwork methods andtechniques, statistical awareness and mapwork.2 The production <strong>of</strong> a Geographical Study <strong>of</strong> 25 pages in length based on aresearch topic set in a local context. Pupils are required to apply the skills learned inunit 1.3 Geographical Issues: pupils are expected to produce one critical essay(maximum <strong>of</strong> 12 pages) based on personal research <strong>of</strong> a key geographical issue(physical or human).AssessmentInternal assessment is based on the collection <strong>of</strong> evidence relating to the completion<strong>of</strong> each <strong>of</strong> these units. External assessment is based on a written paper whichexamines statistical and geographical methods (30%) and on external marking <strong>of</strong> thesubmitted essay and study (70% <strong>of</strong> the total). Grading <strong>of</strong> the course award is basedon external assessment.ProgressionAdvanced <strong>High</strong>er Geography may lead to a wide range <strong>of</strong> courses in further andhigher education. Since Geography bridges the arts and sciences, it gives flexibilityfor higher education courses and <strong>of</strong>fers a wide range <strong>of</strong> career opportunities.Form 6 Subject ChoiceMarch 201225
