Even if you are not planning a career in this field,the course can improve your personal effectiveness by developing your ability tothink logically, work accurately, make decisions and solve problems.The course consists <strong>of</strong> 2 units:1 Financial Accounting: The role <strong>of</strong> the financial accountant Completing business documents, such as bank statements and invoices Calculating trade and cash discounts Recording financial information in ledger accounts, correcting errors and usinga suspense account Updating a bank account and preparing a bank reconciliation statement Preparing a petty cash statement Different types <strong>of</strong> business ownership Preparing final accounts for sole traders, partnerships, limited companies, andnot-for-pr<strong>of</strong>it organisations Calculating and understanding accounting ratios2 Management Accounting: Calculating, describing and controlling business costs Preparing cost statements Applying break-even analysis and decision-making techniques The benefits <strong>of</strong> using information technology in management accounting Using a spreadsheet as an accounting tool Preparing a cash budget for the purposes <strong>of</strong> planning and controlPupils wishing to study this subject must have good mathematical skills as the use <strong>of</strong>spreadsheets will be fundamental to a large area <strong>of</strong> the course.The external assessment will be a 2-hour question paper <strong>of</strong> a computational andtheoretical nature, which will sample equally across the range and content <strong>of</strong> theFinancial and Management Accounting elements <strong>of</strong> the course and include theintegration <strong>of</strong> topics within each <strong>of</strong> the Financial and Management Accounting areas.6Form 6 Subject ChoiceMarch 2012
