EnglishCommunication (<strong>High</strong>er)Pupils who have achieved <strong>High</strong>er or Intermediate 2 English and who would like tocontinue with English in some form, though not wishing to sit Advanced <strong>High</strong>er, mightwish to take this course, which looks at English from a less literary, more practicalangle. Communication <strong>High</strong>er is a National Unit, which consists <strong>of</strong> four elements: Reading Writing Listening Talk.ReadingThe pupil is required to respond to complex texts, identifying purpose and exploringthe techniques <strong>of</strong> the writer.WritingThe pupil is asked to produce a well-structured written communication on a complextopic. (This might provide opportunities for report writing and other transactionalpieces.)ListeningThe pupil will respond to an audio piece, commenting on content and style.TalkThe pupil must produce and respond to oral communication on a complex topic.This is an interesting and useful course, which teaches communication skills whichmay well be found invaluable at college or university, in business or industry.Literature 1There also exists the possibility <strong>of</strong> undertaking the course as described above, plusthe Literature 1 textual analysis paper, which involves a thematic study <strong>of</strong> two ormore texts in one genre.This is an accessible and worthwhile course in that it provides opportunities toencounter and practise transactional English skills which may be <strong>of</strong> practical use topupils when they leave school.A pass in this course may in certain limited circumstances be considered as evidence<strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>iciency in English for some non-Arts university or college courses.Form 6 Subject ChoiceMarch 201253
