Latin (Head of Department: Mr J Meehan)National UnitThis is a beginners’ course in Latin. Students taking this course will acquire a basicknowledge of the structure and vocabulary of the language, which could serve as abasis of further study later for students who find that at some point in their studies -e.g. in medieval history - they require a knowledge of Latin to pursue their subject indepth. It should also be of interest and benefit to students interested in languagessuch as French and Spanish, which are derived from Latin, and to students ofEnglish, well over half of whose vocabulary is derived from Latin.The course requires two periods a week. It does not appear in the column optionsand the periods are to be negotiated independently. Assessment is by short teststaken during class time and a pass will be recorded on the student’s ScottishQualifications Authority certificate.MusicPupils may undertake free standing units in Sound Engineering and Production Performing (for those who receive instrumental instruction in school).Further details are available from the Head of Music.54Form 6 Subject ChoiceMarch 2012
