PREFACEThe Emergency Medical Service of the Prague Capital – Regional Rescue Service Headquarters, isone of the oldest organizations of its kind in the world. This year we are celebrating our 150th year inexistence. For a century and a half, we and our predecessors have tried to give hope to our fellowcitizens in the most difficult life situations. The nurses waiting on the 155 line, the emergency medicaltechnicians, the doctors, but also the garage forepersons, the telephone operators and people ofother professions, all work in unison to make our assistance the fastest and the best it can be.Not all of them can be seen in this book, however, this book does tell about all of them, and notjust about those from Prague either. You will see unusual episodes which are commonplace for us.I was just a little boy when my dad brought me here for the first time. He worked here for over20 years. He started out as an ambulance driver and ended up as a doctor. I grew up with thisinstitution as well, and it is an honor for me to have been heading it for nine years now. My job wasnot always to be a beloved director, because my ambition – similarly to any other employee – is andremains to see to it that under all circumstances, no sick or injured person in the capital city suffersneedlessly.
