Program for the Elimination of Cancer Disparities (PECaD)
of Medicine course. During the summer of 2012, we will offer a course for community
stakeholders entitled Research: Does It Make a Lick of Sense through the new
Community Partnership Center in North St. Louis (associated with the Komen
project). Community residents who complete the course will be given a certificate and
asked to help teach subsequent courses, thus fostering and building a legacy of
community-driven cancer research education.
Setting up the transdisciplinary postdoctoral training program has given PECaD the
opportunity to make new connections within several disciplinary infrastructures on
the Washington University campuses. We have begun to build a strong foundation
between faculty open to interdisciplinary training and mentoring, including those
practicing public health, epidemiology, translational medicine, biostatistics and social
work. A training manual has been developed to guide both postdocs and mentors
through the process, including program goals, objectives, and a detailed timeline for
gauging progress of the Individual Development Plan (IDP) process.
