Urban GrainThe fine urban grain of the traditional core streets equateswith some of the most attractive and successful places inthe town centre. Here buildings of varying periods andquality, on narrow plots, produce a near continuousfrontage, which overlooks and encloses the streets.The historic areas east and west of the core shopping areaare characterised by a more mixed urban grain with somenotable buildings but other areas of poorer quality. Theseareas need sensitive treatment, where new buildings canenhance the built environment but need to have carefulregard to their surroundings.The riverfront areas are characterised by low densitydispersed development, large scale buildings set in largespaces. Buildings are large but generally single storeywarehouse type structures which are more characteristic ofedge of centre developments.
