Accreditation is a progressive and time-proven way of helpinginstitutions evaluate and improve their overall performance.The cornerstone of this strategy lies in the promulgation of standardscontaining a clear statement of professional objectives. Participatingadministrators then conduct a thorough analysis to determine how existingoperations can be adapted to meet these objectives. When theprocedures are in place, a team of independent professionals is assignedto verify that all applicable standards have been successfullyimplemented. The process culminates with a decision by an authoritativebody that the institution is worthy of accreditation.Accreditation status represents a significant professionalachievement. The achievement is made especially noteworthy becauseof the formal recognition which is granted to indicate that an institutionmeets or exceeds general expectations of quality in the field. In essence,accreditation acknowledges the implementation of policies that areconceptually sound and operationally effective.Participation in the Accreditation Program is voluntary. There are nocharges for any program services or materials.PROGRAM GOALSThe Genesee County Sheriff’s Office:* Police Bureau* Civil Bureau* 9-1-1 Dispatch Centerhave all received accreditation.The New York State Law Enforcement Accreditation Program providesa formal mechanism by which the activities of law enforcementagencies can be systematically updated, measured and evaluated.The program has four principal goals:1. to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of law enforcementagencies utilizing existing personnel, equipment, and facilities tothe extent possible.2. to promote increased cooperation and coordination among lawenforcement agencies and other agencies of the criminal justicesystem.3. to ensure the appropriate training of law enforcement personnel.4. to promote public confidence in law enforcement agencies.4Accreditation
