Creating and Updating a User Directorydirectxa special||To bring online the new version of a directory named SECRET DRCT, enter:directxa secret drctNotes:1. To update the directory your installation is currently using, you must haveprivilege class A, B, or C (by convention, MAINT or your chosen installation userID usually has the appropriate class).2. The system does not check for overlapping extents in the directory. Therefore, while changing the directory source file, you should check your new directoryentries to ensure that the new MDISK allocations you are defining do notoverlap existing MDISK allocations. If an overlap occurs, one virtual machineuser could unknowingly destroy data belonging to another.3. If you are migrating from VM/XA SP, you cannot use the DIRECTXA utility toinstall an object directory in z/VM format on the VM/XA SP system residencepack while your system is running on VM/XA SP. Instead, you should use asecond physical pack for the z/VM object directory.Changing the DirectoryFor more information on the DIRECTXA command, see z/VM: CP Commands andUtilities Reference. To change your directory, you must:1. Edit the file that contains the source directory2. Add, delete, or change directory entries as required3. Bring your modified directory online by entering the command to start theDIRECTXA utility. As an alternative method of modifying specific pieces of information in the onlinedirectory, you can run an application program that uses DIAGNOSE code X'84' on aclass B virtual machine. (DirMaint, the Directory Maintenance licensed program, isone such application. Use of DIAGNOSE code X'84' allows DirMaint to makecertain changes in the online directory without reprocessing the source directory.)When used by an application such as DirMaint, DIAGNOSE X'84' improves theturnaround time needed to make the changes active and minimizes the need tototally reprocess the source directory. It cannot, however, delete existing entries noralter USER entries in the source directory. It only replaces existing online directorydata. For more information on this DIAGNOSE code, refer to z/VM: CP ProgrammingServices.Checking a Directory for ErrorsBefore you bring a directory online, if you want to check the directory for errors, usethe EDIT option of the DIRECTXA utility. For example, to check a directory namedMYDIRECT DIRECT for errors, enter:directxa mydirect (editIn response, DIRECTXA checks MYDIRECT DIRECT for errors but does not bring itonline (even if there are no errors).454 z/VM: CP Planning and Administration
