Configuring Your Systemv The defaults that will be used for querying other users’ POSIX databaseinformation <strong>and</strong> having their POSIX security values changedv The IODF that HCD will use to control <strong>CP</strong>’s I/O configuration.Note: You cannot define the size of system storage in the system configuration file.For information on defining the size of system storage to a value less thanwhat is actually available, see the STORE parameter under “Passing IPLParameters” on page 42.Contents of the System Configuration FileThe following sections contain a brief description of some of the statements thatyou can specify in the system configuration file. For complete descriptions of all thesystem configuration statements <strong>and</strong> general rules for coding a systemconfiguration file, see Chapter 6, “The System Configuration File,” on page 51.The Bare MinimumYou must include the following statements for the system to come up:v <strong>CP</strong>_OWNED defines a volume in the <strong>CP</strong>-owned volume list. After the system isrunning, you can use the DEFINE <strong>CP</strong>OWNED comm<strong>and</strong> to change this list. (Tomake the change permanent, update the system configuration file.)v SYSTEM_RESIDENCE specifies the location of the checkpoint <strong>and</strong> warm startareas.v OPERATOR_CONSOLE defines a list of console addresses from which <strong>CP</strong>should choose the operator console.These three statements are all that the system really needs to come up <strong>and</strong> startrunning.Other Important StatementsYou may also want to include the following statements:v SYSTEM_IDENTIFIER <strong>and</strong> SYSTEM_IDENTIFIER_DEFAULT define systemidentifiers for the processors on which you run z/<strong>VM</strong>.v TIMEZONE_DEFINITION <strong>and</strong> TIMEZONE_BOUNDARY enable the system tochoose the correct local time zone definition.v IODF indicates that HCM <strong>and</strong> HCD will control the hardware <strong>and</strong> optionally thesoftware I/O configuration.Real DevicesThe statements previously listed are the most basic ones that you need to get yoursystem running <strong>and</strong> to give it an identifier <strong>and</strong> a local time. You can customize yoursystem further with the other statements. For example, if you are not using HCM<strong>and</strong> HCD to control your software I/O configuration, you can define real devices tothe system <strong>and</strong> establish characteristics for them using the following statements:v RDEVICE defines real I/O devices that do not respond to a sense ID request <strong>and</strong>I/O devices that need more defining information than a sense ID request returns(for example, printers <strong>and</strong> communications controllers). After the system isrunning, you can use the SET RDEVICE comm<strong>and</strong> to define or redefine realdevices.See Chapter 5, “Defining I/O Devices,” on page 45 for information about whichdevices may need to be defined with RDEVICE statements.v DEVICES tells <strong>CP</strong> whether to bring specified devices online, accept <strong>and</strong> buildreal device blocks for specified devices, <strong>and</strong> use the information returned from aChapter 2.
