Final report, VIA REGIA „European city- and culture tourism“ Nowograd-Wolynskyj The city was first-mentioned in the year 1256 under the name Woswjagel. One year later, it was burnt down from the Galician Prince Danilo Galitzkij. At a later time, the city was called Swjagel. In 1795 it got under Russia’s dominion and was renamed to Nowograd-Wolynskyj. From 1920 to 1939 Nowograd-Wolynskyj had an important military significance, as it was situated at the borderline between the Soviet Union and Poland. In World War II, Nowograd was severely destroyed. Nowograd-Wolynskyj is the birthplace of the Ukrainian poetess, dramatist, and lyricist Lesja Ukrainka (1871-1913). Zhytomyr Zhytomyr was founded around the 9th century. The city is an administration-, cultur- and industry centre of the region with the same name. It has always been the traffic junction point of the region, however it has considerably enlarged as location for trade during the last century. Zhytomyr is popular for its gardens, parks and green alleys, in particular those along the rocky riverside of the Teterew, where the city is located. Worth seeing evidences of the architecture of Zhytomyrs comprise among other the former magistral building from the 17 th century, the Sophien-Cathedral originating from the 18 th century, as well as several museums, which include the Korolenko- and Koroljow Memorial Place. 4.3.5 Kiewska Region Since the Middle Ages, Kiew the Capitol of this region, already represents a great tourist attraction because of itself. Owing to its historic role, people refer to it as Mother of all Russian Cities. Being first-mentioned in the year 559, Kijiv (Kiew) has ever since been one of the most important culture- and trade metropolises of East Europe and is often called as Jerusalem of the North due to the many churches and monasteries, as well as because its meaning for the Orthodox Christianity. Kiew’s city picture stands in contrast between the dreariness of the metropolitan new buildings and the charm of sacral and historic monuments. Popularity was gained by the old city district Prodil with its numerous buildings from the 12th – 13th century. The early years haven’t left that many marks for the characterization of the city. The Golden Gate, which is today a reconstruction in concrete, some uncovered foundation walls of previous buildings and the walls of the Sophien-Cathedral, which have been raised in Byzantine opus mixtum-technique tell of the early and late medieval times. Without a doubt, the West-Ukraine, which includes the course of the VIA REGIA, can be considered to be most attractive to tourists. The attractions of this region are multifaceted. It is the traditional landscape of the Carpathians, plenty of historic cities, whose interesting factor becomes increased twice in these days due to their communist history, as because of a noteworthy culture, arisen by the coexistence of different nations or the crossings of numerous historic routes between East and West, North and South. The tourist usage of these factors through international travelers faces the „slowing down“aspect of the language skills, which makes it difficult to travel certainly around in the country.
