Final report, VIA REGIA „European city- and culture tourism“ Mihla Further along the Werratal-cycling trail, the next place to be reached is Mihla. Here, the “Graue Schloss” dated back to the 16 th century deserves particular mention (see picture documentation, image 9). The Rote Schloss is also dated back to the 16th century and ranks among the most important Renaissance-timber-framed buildings of the Wartburg district. The Protestant church St. Martin is a Baroque hall church from the 18 th century and possesses rococo furniture. The tower with its characteristically low spire originates from the Roman predecessor building of the 12 th century. Thiemsburg In consideration of a possible routing for the bicycle corridor „VIA REGIA“, Thiemsburg seems to be a good choice as starting point for the entry into the National Park Hainrich, which represents one of the scenic highlights in Thuringia. With the National Park centre and the Baumkronenpfad, this place offers ideal conditions to find out more about the National Park and its natural peculiarities. This location is at the same time the starting point for hiking tours within the National Park (see picture documentation, image 10). Final report, VIA REGIA „European city- and culture tourism“ Günthersleben/Wechmar One of the historic buildings in Wechmar is the country house Studnitz. Built in 1750, its centre-piece, a rococo hall ranks today among the most beautiful halls of its kind in middle Germany. Moreover the museum in the Bach-Stammhaus (see picture documentation, image 11) is worth a visit. On the grounds of the former water palace in Wechmar, there has been established a (nearby) recreational area including the „Informationszentrum für Regionalgeschichte und Geologie“ (Information centre for Regional History and Geology). Another sight is the “Geopark Inselsberg – Drei Gleichen”, and since 2008 officially the “Nationaler GeoPark in Deutschland”. The area around the barrier of Wechmar is considered to be an attractive opportunity for recreation. Mühlberg This place located in the region of the „Drei Gleichen“ is renowned as one of the oldest, officially mentioned places in Thuringia. The most important sight of Mühlberg is the “Mühlburg” situated at the eastern suburb of the town and one of the „Drei Gleichen“. The Drei Gleichen got its name due to a remarkable public ensemble on the proposed cycling trail. These include the „Mühlburg“ near Mühlberg, and the „Castle Gleichen“ near Wandersleben, as well as the „Veste Wachsenburg“ near Holzhausen (see picture documentation, image 12). Further sights are the „Mühlberger Spring“, a karstic spring, and the medieval fortified church Sankt Lukas which was first officially mentioned in 726. Wandersleben The worth seeing centre-pieces of the place include for instance the „Menantes- Literaturgedenkstätte“, an exhibition about the life and work of the once famous Christian Friedrich Hunold alias Menantes. Also the medieval tower house, which was rediscovered during construction in 1985, and the church St. Petri with the Schröter-Organ from 1724 (see picture documentation, image 13) belong to the interesting places. A popular event is the „Thüringer Burgenfahrt“ (Thuringian castle tour), which is participated by over 10,000 cyclists every year. This event in Wandersleben is deemed to be one of the biggest bicycle rallies worldwide. Apfelstädt The town being situated at the river of the same name is worth a visit due to its church St. Walpurgis which has its origins back in the 11th century and can be seen from wide and far. A permanent exhibition about the local history is shown in its immediate vicinity and documents the farming lifestyle as well as the history of the school- and baking practice. Another sight of the town is the “Öl- und Mahlmühle” (oil- and flour mill). Neudietendorf Neudietendorf is rich in history around its mill works to be visited in the town, especially the listed „Untermühle“ (see picture documentation, image 14).
