PLATINUMIntroductionMogalakwena Mine proposes to undertake five new projects:• Tailings Retreatment Plant (TRP)• A waste disposal site• River diversion• Road re-alignment and upgrade• A Conveyor or a railway line2

PLATINUMLocality and Infrastructure Map3

PLATINUMEnvironmental authorisation from:• Limpopo Department of Economic Development, Environment and Tourism (LEDET) for theproposed tailings retreatment plant, river diversion and road re-alignment and Conveyor orRailway Line• Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) for the proposed new waste site• Department of Mineral Resources (DMR) for all sites as amendments to the existingapproved Environmental Management Programme (EMP)• Department of Water Affairs (DWA) for a Water Use Licence Application (WULA) for the riverdiversion and river crossing components of the TRP and convey/railway line project.4

PLATINUMTailings Retreatment Plant (TRP)• Advanced technology for more efficient extraction of PGMs• Proposed Location on Blinkwater (preferred) or Swartfontein (2 nd option)• Advantages of Blinkwater site:– It is in close proximity to the N11 between Limburg and Mokopane– It is closest to the existing Blinkwater Tailings Dam– The land is available and will not be required for use in the planned future expansions of themine.• Will receive tailings from the North and South Concentrators on the mine• Final tailings (waste) will be disposed of on the existing Tailings Dams• 6 hectares (ha) in size with TRP plant, office and parking lot• Pipes and power lines will supply TRP with water, electricity and tailings. Tailings andconcentrate will leave the TRP. Pipes will cross Mohlasane River 6

PLATINUMRiver Diversion• The existing Sandsloot Pit is to be extended northwards to extract more ore• This will affect the course of the Groot Sandsloot River channel, which will requirediversion to prevent inflow into the pit• The first option is to only divert the river to the north• The second option, is to divert the river to the north and west.• The choice between the two options is dependent on engineering and cost aspects• The diversion channel will be designed to accommodate flow in the Sandsloot River• The diverted section will be on the mine property• The diversion will entail trenching and then construction of canal or pipeto allow thecontinued flow of water• Construction area will be rehabilitated 7

PLATINUMRe-alignment and Upgrade of road D4380• Re-align the portion of the D4380 Provincial Road along the boundaries of the farmsSwartfontein 818LR and Overysel 815 LR• 3,8 km of road• After re-alignment , road section will be upgraded to:- 9.4 metre wide tarred road, comprising a 7.4 m tarred surfaced and 1 metre wide gravel shoulders on eitherside.- Road servitude will be 30 metres wide aligned to the Road Agency Limpopo requirements.• Funded by Anglo American Platinum Limited (AMPLATS) as part of its expansion of themining activities at Mogalakwena Mine, and its contribution to the improvement of theroads infrastructure in the vicinity of the Mine8

PLATINUMWaste Site• Current waste site is nearing its capacity and has to be closed and rehabilitated• New waste site required for non-hazardous, non-recyclable domestic waste• Proposed location on Swartfontein farm• Footprint of 4.6 ha• Expected lifespan of 25 years• Facility will be unlined, and operated on a cell by cell basis• Operation will include:- weekly compaction and covering to ensure a longer lifespan, and for health reasons- Paper, plastic and metals will be sorted at the waste facility for recycling9

PLATINUMWaste Site cont….• Hazardous waste will be stored temporarily in containers in a demarcated enclosed areaand transported weekly for disposal at a registered hazardous landfill site at Holfontein inSprings, Gauteng• Hazardous waste will comprise mainly of fluorescent tubes, laboratory effluent and soilcontaminated with fuel or chemicals• Soil contaminated with oil and fuel will be rehabilitated at the waste site• Operated by the Mine in collaboration with a specialist waste management contractor10

PLATINUMProposed conveyor or railway line• The Sandsloot pit that is currently supplying the Southern Concentrator is nearing the endof its viability.• When production from the Sandsloot Pit Stops, the Southern Concentrator will havecapacity available for ore from other pits.• A decision on which form of transportation to adopt will be taken on the basis ofenvironmental, engineering and financial considerations.• To exploit this capacity, it will be necessary to transport the ore to the concentrator.• A means of transport from the Northern Concentrator to the Southern Concentrator istherefore required.• Three forms of transportation have been proposed:– a conveyor belt– cable belt conveyor– a rail system11
