FEATURE Keep Your Home Safe and beat the burglars We all want our homes and possessions to be safe so by working together and tackling security issues, we can help to reduce burglary rates in our areas. Over the last year in Bedfordshire, domestic burglary fell by 20%, non-domestic burglary fell by 24% and by following some simple security steps, we can continue to beat this crime. Did you know that around a third of all break-ins are the result of people leaving doors and windows unlocked? As the nights start to draw in, the burglary rate traditionally goes up and simple security measures can help to reduce the risk and keep your home safe. Getting into good habits before you leave the house means security will become second nature. Make sure you double lock your doors. If they are made out of UPVC make sure you push the handle up when you lock it to ensure all the bolts are in place. Leaving it on the latch makes is easy for a burglar to ‘pop’ the door and help himself. Going out for the night? Leave a few lights on and a plug your radio into a time so that it comes on, suggesting someone’s home. If it seems too risky, burglars won’t bother. Bogus callers Th ese days, distraction burglaries are very common and ‘bogus callers’ posing as private or council workers talk their way into your home or divert your attention. Always answer the door with the chain on and ask for identifi cation. Th ere will be a number on the card you can call while they wait. You are under no obligation to allow them in so if you are not sure of their identity, DON’T. Bedfordshire Police continue the crackdown on this crime and actively encourage people to keep their homes safe and are always available to off er help and advice to the community. Assistant Chief Constable Andrew Richer said: “We continue to arrest and prosecute those people actively committing burglaries.
